It’s easy to see why The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved video game series ever made. Over the last 40 years, its characters, music, and overall style have become famous far beyond just the games themselves.
As a huge Zelda fan, it’s easy to picture things like Link’s green outfit or the different versions of Zelda herself. But what really sticks with me are the items Link uses on his quests! Whether it’s a super powerful artifact, a magical sword, or even just a simple tool, so many of those items are totally iconic – even people who don’t usually play Zelda games would probably recognize them.
Majora’s Mask Has An Incredibly Iconic Design
The Majora’s Mask is more important for driving the story forward than for being a useful item Link uses often. However, its design is one of the most memorable in the entire Legend of Zelda series, particularly considering its prominent role in Majora’s Mask, the sequel to Ocarina of Time.
As a huge Zelda fan, Majora’s Mask has always struck me as seriously creepy! The way it’s designed – those intense, staring eyes and the spikes around the heart shape – really hint at the powerful, ancient evil inside. It’s amazing how iconic it is, even though it hasn’t been a central item in many games outside of appearances in things like Super Smash Bros. and Breath of the Wild. I’m really hoping we get to see more of it soon, maybe even a dedicated release!
Heart Pieces Are A Worthwhile Reward For Brave Adventurers
Heart Pieces first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past along with many other iconic items from the series. These collectibles are highly rewarding, making even the hardest parts of the game – like challenging dungeons and bosses – worth completing. They’re easily recognizable by their bright glow and the heart-within-a-heart design, symbolizing the extra power they provide.
Sometimes, after defeating a big boss or completing certain challenges, you might find a complete Heart Container, instantly giving you a full heart. This is better than collecting Heart Pieces to build one yourself! Even though Heart Pieces aren’t directly used in battles or while exploring, they’re a well-known and memorable item for any adventurer.
Link Can Only Do So Much Without His Handy Bow
Honestly, even before I get the Master Sword or Hylian Shield in any Zelda game, I always rely on Link’s Bow and Arrows. It’s been with him since the very beginning, and it’s just so dependable. It’s a huge part of what makes Link, well, Link. It’s not just for shooting enemies from a distance either; I end up using it for tons of puzzles and messing around with the environment throughout every game.
Link’s Bow is a versatile weapon, occasionally letting you experience gameplay from his point of view. It offers a variety of arrow types and unique combinations to increase its effectiveness, though it can sometimes be overshadowed by more powerful close-combat weapons.
Bombs Are An Essential Part Of Any Adventurer’s Toolkit
Bombs are a common item in The Legend of Zelda series, but they’re also instantly recognizable. Though their appearance has evolved over the years, Legend of Zelda bombs are usually round with a fuse and a metal band, making them stand out in most games.
Even though recent Zelda games are less focused on a strict order, bombs – those classic tools for breaking obstacles and defeating enemies – will definitely remain a key part of the series for years to come.
The Hookshot Is A Stylish Way For Link To Get Around
Link’s Hookshot, though its specific look changes from game to game, is consistently one of the most popular items he can obtain. It’s also appeared in games like Super Smash Bros., giving him extra ways to move and fight, and solidifying its place as a key part of his equipment.
The Hookshot is a truly useful and memorable item, whether you’re navigating tricky areas, grabbing faraway objects, or taking down tough enemies.
Fairy Bottles Are A Life-Saver In Deadly Dungeons
Link often encounters fairies throughout his adventures, like Navi and the Great Fairies who give him special powers. But the most memorable fairies aren’t his companions—they’re the ones he can collect as items. These fairies usually appear as glowing, winged orbs that heal him when he finds them. However, capturing them in bottles is even more useful.
Fairy Bottles are among the most recognizable and useful items in The Legend of Zelda series. When used, they completely refill your health. More importantly, if you have one when you run out of hearts, it will automatically revive you to full health—making them incredibly valuable in almost every game they’re featured in.
Finding Rupees Never Gets Old All These Years Later
Even though Rupees aren’t a classic item in The Legend of Zelda, their unique hexagon shape and vibrant colors are immediately recognizable to any fan. While green Rupees are the most well-known, finding a Silver or Gold Rupee is a rare and valuable find – if you have enough space in your inventory, that is!
Rupees are the main form of money in almost every Legend of Zelda game, and a long-standing mystery is where they all come from. Why are so many Rupees hidden in pots and bushes throughout each game’s world?
The Ocarina’s Popularity Goes Far Beyond Its Titular Entry

While the Ocarina is best known for its important part in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, this musical instrument has appeared in many games throughout the series and remains one of the most iconic items in Zelda history.
Even people who don’t play The Legend of Zelda recognize it, and it’s been frequently referenced and recreated in other games. It remains a beloved and important part of gaming history.
Link’s Hylian Shield Is The Perfect Fit For A Hero
The way you obtain the Hylian Shield varies between games, but it’s always easily recognizable thanks to its beautiful design featuring Zelda’s family crest and the Triforce. Any hero would be thrilled to own it.
The Hylian Shield is known for being both incredibly durable and surprisingly light, making it Link’s go-to defensive item since it first appeared in Ocarina of Time. While other shields in the Zelda series have unique powers, the Hylian Shield’s design is arguably the most recognizable in the entire series.
The Master Sword Is One Of Gaming’s Most Recognizeable Weapons
First appearing in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the Master Sword has become a core part of Link’s heroic identity, appearing in most games since. Originally used by the Goddess Hylia, this powerful sword is one of the few weapons capable of defeating villains like Ganondorf, due to its magical properties.
Delaying access to the Master Sword until the mid-to-late game makes earning it feel even more rewarding. Its distinctive design is instantly recognizable as a hero’s weapon, and even without its special powers, it’s a satisfying item to obtain.
