The first movie in the series has raised the bar for 3D animation in films. But the filmmaker responsible for the movie’s visuals revealed that it almost took ten years to make – they had to scale back their initial ambitious plans to finish it in a reasonable timeframe.
The film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie – Infinity Castle won the “Anime of the Year” award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2026. During the acceptance speech, Yuichi Terao, the film’s cinematography and finishing director, praised the animation team’s hard work, especially the 3D animators who built the elaborate “Infinity Castle.”
Demon Slayer Director on Infinity Castle Part 2 Release Following Anime of the Year Award
The castle was incredibly detailed and complex, so the team had to simplify how it was displayed to save time. According to Terao, some thought it could take anywhere from three to ten years to build. Considering the entire Infinity Castle project only took about three and a half years, that’s a significant accomplishment.
Despite having a budget of around $20 million, Studio Ufotable created a film with visuals comparable to much higher-budget productions. According to Terao, the film Infinity Castle contains roughly 2,000 individual shots, all animated by a surprisingly small team. He also expressed optimism about the talent and energy of the younger animators involved.
Worldwide, Infinity Castle is performing very well. In Japan, it’s currently second only to the previous Demon Slayer movie, Infinity Train, which has made around 40.75 billion yen (about $255.1 million), according to Oricon’s box office reports.
Since its release in July 2025, Infinity Castle has become a major success, earning over 39.84 billion yen (about $249.3 million) in Japan. Worldwide, the film has grossed over $800 million, with more than $130 million coming from audiences in the U.S. It also had the biggest opening weekend ever for an anime movie in North America, taking in over $70 million from September 12th to 14th, 2025.
Demon Slayer Fans Should ‘Stay Tuned, Stay Excited’ for Infinity Castle Part 2, Director Says
Following the success of Infinity Castle, director Sotozaki is aiming even bigger with future installments. Accepting the Anime of the Year award with Terao, he said he hopes the recognition will inspire him to push himself further in his work.
He’s talked often about his plans for Infinity Castle Part 2, and has mentioned that his favorite Demon Slayer character, Inosuke, will play a bigger role in the sequel. He believes fans will be pleased with what happens next, saying, “If you stay tuned and stay excited, I think it will meet everyone’s expectations.”
Because Infinity Castle became incredibly popular in North America, it was shown in U.S. and Canadian theaters for a single day on March 6, 2026. This allowed the film to then become available on streaming services worldwide.
You can currently watch the anime Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba on Hulu, Netflix, and Crunchyroll. The original manga by Koyoharu Gotouge is published in English by VIZ Media.
