Guy Ritchie’s Murder Mystery Series Young Sherlock Knocked Off No. 1 on Prime Video

Though it’s no longer at the top of the charts just two weeks after its release, the series remains very successful.

The new eight-part series launched on Prime Video on March 4th and quickly became popular. While it initially competed with Nicole Kidman’s Scarpetta for the top spot, the show has now been overtaken, according to FlixPatrol. The show’s fourth season returned with consistently high ratings and proved to be another success.

Guy Ritchie Returns to Sherlock Holmes

The film Young Sherlock was directed by the filmmaker who also made two popular Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The first film came out in 2009, and the second followed in 2011. Downey Jr. played the iconic detective, while Jude Law portrayed his close friend and colleague, Dr. John Watson.

Robert Downey Jr. and director Guy Ritchie, along with producer Susan Downey, have talked about making a third film. However, due to everyone’s busy schedules, they haven’t been able to find a time that works for all of them. Downey Jr. is incredibly well-known for playing Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a role he held until 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, and recently earned an Oscar for his performance in the 2023 film Oppenheimer.

Jude Law, who has been nominated for an Oscar twice, has appeared in several major film series. He’s known for playing Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films, Yon-Rogg in Captain Marvel (2019), and recently joined the Star Wars universe with Skeleton Crew, alongside numerous other roles.

Unlike the previous Sherlock Holmes movies, ‘Young Sherlock’ tells an entirely new story focusing on a younger version of the famous detective. The original cast doesn’t appear in this version, and instead, Ritchie is directing and executive producing the first two episodes.

The show features a talented cast including Donal Finn as James Moriarty, Natascha McElhone as his mother, Cordelia Holmes, and Joseph Fiennes, who is actually the uncle of one of the stars, playing Sherlock’s father, Silas. Zine Tseng plays Princess Gulun Shou’an / Xiao Wei, Max Irons is Mycroft Holmes, and Colin Firth appears as Sir Bucephalus Hodge.

In 1870s England, shortly after being released from prison, a young Sherlock Holmes is still developing his detective skills. He takes a scouting position at Oxford University and unexpectedly becomes friends with James Moriarty. When a murder occurs on campus, Sherlock’s freedom is threatened, and he finds himself uncovering a far-reaching conspiracy with surprisingly personal connections.

Young Sherlock Has Been a Success

The series launched with all eight episodes on March 4th and quickly became a global hit. Before its release, the trailer already broke records for views on Prime Video, generating a lot of anticipation and driving viewers to tune in.

I really enjoyed Young Sherlock, and it’s great to see both critics and regular viewers seemed to feel the same way! It started with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and even though it dipped slightly, it still holds an impressive 83% approval rating from everyone. But, frustratingly, Prime Video hasn’t said anything about whether we’ll get another season, which is a real bummer.

The last episode of Young Sherlock, “The Case of Beatrice Holmes,” finally solved the central mystery from the first season, resolving most unanswered questions. But it also cleverly set the stage for Season 2, with Silas’s key hinting at several new storylines. Moriarty’s actions – killing a soldier to protect Xiao Wei, his hidden connection to Beatrice, and his final deception of Sherlock – demonstrate that there are plenty of opportunities to continue telling stories within the Young Sherlock world.
