HBO Max’s Emmy-Winning 5-Season Comedy Series Is Officially Ending This Year With First Look Revealed

The popular HBO comedy-drama, Hacks, which centers around strong female characters, will conclude with its final season later this year, and fans are now getting a first look at what’s to come.

The TV show Hacks began in 2021 and centers around Deborah Vance, a veteran comedian, and Ava Daniels, a young writer, both hoping to revitalize their careers. Deborah, facing the possibility of losing her show in Las Vegas, hires Ava as a writer, despite Ava being ostracized after a controversial social media post.

The acclaimed series, a twelve-time Emmy winner including four for Jean Smart’s performance as Deborah, is ending with its fifth season. Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava, has also won an Emmy for her supporting role. New photos and a preview of the guest stars for the final season were released on Saturday, as reported by Vogue.

Ann Dowd, Cherry Jones, and Leslie Bibb are the latest actors joining the cast, and they’ll be playing some truly unusual characters. Dowd, specifically, will portray a blue alien with white hair and antennae.

The creators of the show shared that they’ve known how the finale would play out since the very beginning. According to showrunner Lucia Aniello, the final scene was actually part of their original pitch. They had a clear vision for how the season – and the entire show, if given the chance – would conclude. Aniello promised fans will see storylines come full circle and references to moments from all four previous seasons, all in an effort to deliver a truly satisfying ending.

The new HBO show boasts a hilarious cast, including Megan Stalter, Paul W. Downs, Robby Hoffman, Kaitlin Olson, Christina Hendricks, Jane Adams, and Helen Hunt, among others. They perfectly deliver the show’s sharp and often biting comedy. Despite the sarcasm, the series also has a heartwarming side, beautifully depicting the growing friendship between Deborah and Ava and offering a realistic look at female bonds.

In the season four finale, Ava challenges Deborah about her drinking and harmful choices. Deborah, unwilling to change, asks Ava to leave, creating another strain on their relationship. However, the conflict is quickly overshadowed when Ava discovers what she believes to be Deborah’s obituary. It turns out Deborah is actually still alive, and the false report of her death motivates her to take action.

Deborah is concerned about her obituary and how people will remember her, so she asks Ava for help. The story ends without revealing what happens next, leaving things uncertain. Hopefully, we’ll find out what happens soon.
