I was genuinely surprised by how positive almost everyone’s initial reaction to “Project Hail Mary” has been. While Ryan Gosling is incredibly popular and has a dedicated fanbase, the movie relies on a heartwarming formula that often receives criticism from more skeptical viewers. Plus, it doesn’t exactly break new ground in the science fiction genre.
Thankfully, “Project Hail Mary” is a fantastic film. It’s a warm and optimistic science-fiction adventure, largely thanks to the captivating performance of its lead actor. This role is a great fit for where Ryan Gosling is in his career right now. While he occasionally leans into silliness and charm, he stays surprisingly down-to-earth, which keeps this surprisingly engaging and lengthy movie grounded and enjoyable for most of its runtime.
Adapted from Andy Weir’s 2021 novel, “Project Hail Mary” was written for the screen by Drew Goddard. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller once again combine stunning visuals with a sense of playful excitement. While the story isn’t entirely original, the filmmakers focus on heartfelt, human moments, which are just as impactful as the impressive scenes set in space. The film also features a particularly touching change in focus during its second half, making it even more rewarding.
The movie starts with a familiar premise: saving Earth from disaster. Scientists discover the sun is fading because of a fast-growing organism called Astrophage, which is draining its energy and will eventually cause a global ice age. In a desperate attempt to prevent extinction, they search for answers and find that only one star, Tau Ceti, hasn’t been affected by the Astrophage.
Meet Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), a scientist who now teaches middle school after facing rejection in his field. He’s unexpectedly approached by Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller), the leader of a massive international effort called Hail Mary. She asks him to join a crucial, one-way mission to the Tau Ceti star system to investigate why it’s not being affected by a mysterious, star-eating phenomenon called the Astrophage – a last-ditch attempt to save Earth.
Okay, so the movie tells this incredible story mostly through flashbacks, which are woven in really well. It actually starts with Grace waking up from a coma to find out he’s the only one who made it on their long trip to Tau Ceti. Can you imagine? He’s completely alone, light years from Earth, and suddenly has to figure out how to finish the mission that could save everyone back home. It’s a really intense setup!
The movie becomes much more interesting when Grace realizes he isn’t the only one studying Tau Ceti. He meets an intriguing alien made of stone – the last survivor of a crew sent to protect their planet from a dangerous threat called the Astrophage. At first, they’re both cautious, but they quickly become curious about each other and bond over their common goal. They begin to understand each other, share what they know, and team up to save their respective planets.
It’s enjoyable to see the characters come up with ideas and test them out, but it’s their growing friendship that truly drives the story forward. Grace names his new friend Rocky, and their bond strengthens as they tackle increasingly important tasks together. Rocky was brought to life by the talented Neal Scanlan, an Oscar-winning effects artist, using a combination of practical effects like animatronics and puppetry, along with visual effects. Rocky is a wonderfully realized character who feels real and immediately captures our attention and sympathy.
“Project Hail Mary” is a bit lengthy at 156 minutes and slows down slightly around the middle. However, the filmmakers quickly regain momentum, delivering a thrilling and visually stunning experience that’s both grand in scope and deeply personal. The film’s impressive practical effects are a highlight, but it’s the heartwarming story and emotional depth that truly make it captivating. While it doesn’t offer anything entirely new, it’s hard to find fault with a film that executes its strengths so effectively.
