Just as Yellowstone seemed to be heading towards a powerfully tragic climax, the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, unexpectedly changed a key plot point. This weakened the impact of later episodes. After building intense animosity between John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and one of his children – a conflict that eventually leads to a deadly outcome – Sheridan chose a sensational, over-the-top twist instead of a more realistic and devastating family feud, ultimately diminishing the emotional weight of the tragedy.
A major plot twist in Yellowstone Season 3, Episode 7, “The Beating,” revealed that Jamie Dutton was adopted. The episode showed Jamie discovering his birth mother was murdered by his biological father, a revelation that felt forced and didn’t quite fit with the rest of the story. This twist ultimately undermined much of what had happened before and continues to feel out of place.
Taylor Sheridan Retcons ‘Yellowstone’ in Season 3, Episode 7, “The Beating”

As a huge fan of Yellowstone, I’ve been completely hooked since the beginning. The first few seasons really dug into the complicated relationship between John Dutton and his son, Jamie. It’s fascinating to watch because Jamie, being the educated and politically-minded one, never quite saw eye-to-eye with his dad about how to run the ranch. This created a lot of tension and a real lack of trust between them, especially as Jamie tried to forge his own path while still craving his father’s approval. It’s a classic struggle, and the show does a brilliant job of portraying it.
Jamie prioritizing his political ambitions over the ranch creates an unfixable rift with his father, John, setting the stage for a dramatic and devastating conflict. However, the show’s creator, Sheridan, weakens this potentially epic storyline by changing Jamie’s past and contradicting established details of the show’s history.
In Season 3, Episode 7, titled “The Beating,” Jamie begins a search for his birth certificate and makes a shocking discovery: he isn’t a biological Dutton. He was adopted by John and Evelyn Dutton three months after he was born. He also learns that his birth mother, Phyllis, was killed by his biological father, Garrett Randall. This revelation dramatically changes how Jamie – and the audience – see him. Before learning the truth, his intense desire for revenge against John felt understandable, but afterward, it’s much harder to justify.
Jamie’s Adoption Undermines the Tragic Heft of John’s Death in ‘Yellowstone’

After almost three seasons of Yellowstone, the sudden reveal of Jamie Dutton’s true parentage feels forced and unbelievable. It prioritizes dramatic twists over genuine character growth, essentially erasing the three years and 25 episodes of backstory that viewers had fully accepted. This rewrite of Jamie’s history makes his conflict with John feel artificial and weakens both his initial character arc and his later revenge plan.

In Season 5, Episode 9, the show made it seem like John Dutton died by suicide. However, two episodes later, it was revealed that Jamie had actually arranged for John to be killed, using Sarah Atwood’s help. While Jamie had his motivations, the fact that he isn’t John’s biological son diminishes the impact of the story. Instead of a classic family feud like Shakespearean tragedies, the show portrays Jamie and the Duttons as political rivals – including the conflict between Jamie and Beth – which ultimately makes the final episodes less powerful.
The story would have been much stronger if Sheridan had revealed Jamie’s adoption at the beginning, or not mentioned it at all. As it stands, Jamie’s anger feels like it comes from someone looking in, rather than a true family member, which weakens the tension that was built between him and John from the start.
