As a huge movie fan, let me tell you, imagine if Jurassic Park and Apocalypse Now had a baby – that’s pretty much what this incredible sci-fi action film is like! It’s set during the Vietnam War and it’s seriously one of the most unique and thrilling movies I’ve ever seen. And the best news? It’s coming to a new streaming service next month, so more people can discover this hidden gem!
This Australian sci-fi action movie, directed by Luke Sparke and inspired by Ethan Pettus’s novel, centers around a team sent to rescue a group of US Army Special Forces soldiers. Their mission quickly turns chaotic when they come under attack by dinosaurs brought back from extinction. If that sounds exciting, check out the wild trailer below!
I’m really excited that Primitive War is finally coming to Hulu on April 4th! This movie has a fantastic cast – you’ve got Tricia Helfer from Battlestar Galactica, Ryan Kwanten who I loved in True Blood, Jeremy Piven of Entourage, and Nick Wechsler from Revenge. It originally came out in Australia last year, and while it didn’t make a huge splash in theaters here, it created a real buzz at Comic-Con – it was actually the first Australian film to ever have its own headlining panel! If you’re looking for something new to watch, I highly recommend checking it out.
‘Primitive War’ Delivers Exactly What It Promises
Often, low-budget independent films look great in trailers but don’t quite live up to expectations. With a movie like Primitive War, you might assume the dinosaurs would be scarce to save money, meaning the trailer would show all the best footage. But surprisingly, that’s not the case!
In an interview with SyFy Wire last October, director Tim Sparke explained his goal for Primitive War. He wanted to avoid the common problem of trailers misrepresenting a film. “I dislike when a trailer makes you expect one thing, and then the movie doesn’t really deliver on that promise,” he stated.
I’ve noticed a common pattern in Hollywood films, and especially when I go to the movies – action needs to happen frequently. That’s why, with this film, I always emphasized during editing that we needed a dinosaur doing something exciting every five to seven minutes. That’s what audiences expect and what the film promised.
Dinosaurs and soldiers appear equally throughout Primitive War, and it’s surprisingly well-received, earning an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it worth watching next month.
‘Primitive War 2’ Has Been Confirmed

Rialto Distribution
After watching Primitive War, you’ll probably immediately want to see a follow-up. Good news – a sequel is planned and is currently expected to be released around 2027.
Variety reports that a sequel to Primitive War is currently being made, with plans to release it next year. Director Sparke explained that while the first movie focused on initial discovery, the sequel will explore what happens when things get out of control. It will show how nature responds faster than military strategies, and how the original conflict becomes less important than the consequences that emerge.
