This movie was a turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It showed that Marvel could turn lesser-known characters into huge stars and firmly established the franchise’s success. The film also significantly boosted director James Gunn’s career, as his Guardians movies are widely popular. However, despite Gunn laying the groundwork for the Nova Corps within the film, the MCU hasn’t yet explored that potential.
The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie heavily featured the planet Xandar and its military force, the Nova Corps, as central to the plot. The villain, Ronan the Accuser, aimed to destroy both, prompting the Guardians to intervene. This led many fans to expect the arrival of a Nova hero who would play a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s cosmic adventures. However, Nova never materialized, and the MCU’s focus on space-based stories has largely faded.
Space Was the Next Frontier for the MCU, So Why Are There So Few Movies That Go Beyond Earth?
The first Guardians of the Galaxy felt like the beginning of something much larger for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a major step into cosmic storytelling, linking to the character Thanos and introducing audiences to new planets and alien species. While the movie led to two sequels and a holiday special, the MCU’s focus on space adventures seemed to stall after that.
Many films, including The Eternals, briefly explore worlds beyond Earth, but these explorations feel superficial compared to the vast potential of stories set in space. The Fantastic Four: First Steps went a bit further, but ultimately didn’t deliver a truly compelling cosmic adventure.
While Infinity War and Endgame featured some scenes in space, the majority of the action took place on Earth. This makes sense because most of the heroes involved – like Iron Man, Captain America, and others – are primarily Earth-based and don’t typically venture into the cosmos. Thor has had more experience with space adventures, and his films have explored it more than any other, but even those stories feel incomplete.
The Nova Corps from Guardians of the Galaxy had the potential to greatly expand the universe and introduce many new villains. Unfortunately, Xandar and the possibility of a Nova-focused film met with an unfortunate end: they were quietly forgotten and destroyed without being shown on screen.
The MCU Killed Nova Corps and Cosmic Adventures With a Single Scene
The movie Avengers: Infinity War began with a devastating scene: the near-total destruction of Asgard and its people. Thor, Loki, and Hulk were the only survivors, quickly defeating the remaining forces. Many viewers were surprised to see Thanos with the Power Stone, as it was last known to be held by the Xandarians.
Thor explained Thanos and his quest for the stones to the Guardians, and shared the grim fate of Xandar. He revealed that Thanos didn’t just take the Power Stone from Xandar – he completely destroyed the planet. Known for his ruthless conquests, Thanos likely punished Xandar for opposing him.
The destruction of Xandar was a major loss, especially for fans of cosmic Marvel stories and the Nova Corps. It likely means we won’t see a Nova movie starring either Richard Rider or Sam Alexander, and it significantly impacts the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy films after Volume 3, hindering the introduction of a new wave of heroes.
What’s particularly frustrating is that Xander’s removal from the movie might have been intentional, but ultimately detrimental. Reports suggest there was an extra 45 minutes of footage planned for the beginning of Infinity War that would have focused on Xander’s destruction. While cutting scenes for budget and time is understandable, it seems like those scenes could have contained important details for the story.
Killing off Xander could have been a powerful moment, signaling that even in defeat, there was still a path forward. It also could have opened up exciting new possibilities for the future of the franchise in space, but it seems those plans have changed. The destruction of Xandar and the Nova Corps would have been a natural way to introduce the character Richard Rider.
The MCU Could Still Create a Future for Richard Rider’s Nova
Most people know Thanos didn’t initially want to wipe out all life, just half of it. So, it’s likely he approached the destruction of Xandar with the same idea. Completely destroying a planet would be unusual for Thanos, considering he’d often spared others in the past.
I really hope they bring him back! It would open up so many possibilities. In the comics, Rider was one of the last Nova Centurions after Annihilus attacked, and he’s a huge deal in the Marvel universe. I think he could be the perfect lead for a really amazing space adventure in the MCU, and I’d love to see that happen.
Nova is an incredibly strong character with the potential to appear in future Marvel stories. While the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Secret Wars is uncertain, many fans predict a focus on Mutants. However, there’s also a possibility the MCU could explore more stories set in outer space and dealing with cosmic threats.
Considering Thanos likely destroyed half the population of Xandar, many survivors could be scattered across the galaxy, searching for a new home. Similar to what happened with the Asgardians, these refugees could encounter a devastating force in space – potentially Annihilus – easily bringing him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Terrax, known as Rider, would likely survive this encounter, setting up the next major cosmic threat to Earth and the wider universe.
The Guardians of the Galaxy movies hinted at a larger story involving the Nova Corps quite some time ago, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t followed through on those hints. Although it seemed like this storyline was abandoned after Infinity War, there’s still an opportunity for Marvel to revisit it and develop the Nova narrative that Guardians of the Galaxy originally suggested.
