Most TV shows don’t last five seasons these days, except for crime procedurals, and even those aren’t guaranteed success. That’s why it’s such a pleasant surprise when Apple TV+’s For All Mankind keeps delivering high-quality seasons every couple of years.
The series For All Mankind presents a fascinating ‘what if’ scenario: what if the Soviet Union had beaten the United States to the moon? This single change dramatically alters history, creating a ripple effect of unexpected events. The show primarily focuses on the continued pursuit of space exploration, venturing beyond the moon to places like Mars – destinations previously only imagined. Now in its fifth season, For All Mankind appears to be heading in a new and surprising direction, potentially with a major plot twist.
Will For All Mankind Find Aliens?
A major focus of the story is the hunt for life on Mars. Kelly Baldwin and Aleida Rosales are leading this effort to discover any evidence that we aren’t alone in the universe – it could be anything from simple bacteria to more complex organisms. This search connects to a dream a character had about NASA in the first season, hinting that the show might be exploring new and uncharted territory.
The first episode of the series features a speech by flight director Gene Kranz before the Apollo 11 launch, and the show has largely stuck to the vision he outlined. He famously said, “Today, we landed a man on the Moon, but this is just the beginning. We’ll continue to explore, traveling to Mars, Saturn, asteroids, and beyond, reaching for the stars and deep space. Ultimately, we’ll seek answers to fundamental questions: Are we alone in the universe? Is there life elsewhere?”
The show initially focused on reaching and then controlling the moon, which was the main plot for the first two seasons. Starting with Season 3, the story shifted to Mars, exploring the efforts to colonize the planet and fight for independence from Earth. Many viewers believe the series will soon introduce a new space race, this time to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Titan is a promising location in the search for alien life, as it has a thick atmosphere and liquid on its surface. Considering Kelly’s current work, there’s a strong possibility that she and other astronauts will travel there in the future.
For All Mankind Needs to Shake Things Up in Season 5
It’s still uncertain if they’ll discover anything, but the search generally focuses on lifeforms comparable to humans – beings capable of communication, feeling emotions, and possessing advanced intelligence. While we haven’t confirmed the existence of such alien life, dismissing the possibility ignores the vastness of the unexplored universe. There has to be something else out there. Will the show For All Mankind try to speculate about what that might be?
It’s likely that For All Mankind will take a cautious approach to discovering life beyond Earth. The show will probably introduce some form of life, but likely not intelligent creatures. We might see things like plants or fungi instead. This keeps the story grounded in realistic science and avoids criticism for being too far-fetched. The series has so far avoided overly fantastical elements, so any alien life would need to be presented in a believable way.
However, For All Mankind is poised for a shift in direction. The show has spent so much time centered on Mars that audiences are eager for a fresh perspective. The storyline isn’t failing, but there’s a limit to how many stories can be told on a single planet. The series should return to its core themes: the drive to be the first to accomplish something extraordinary, be it reaching a new celestial body or discovering evidence of life beyond Earth.
For All Mankind Seasons 1–4 are available to stream on Apple TV. Season 5 premieres March 27.
