The comic book Powers, created by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, is being adapted for television again. This time, Netflix is turning the superhero noir series into an animated show for adults.
Brian Michael Bendis is writing the pilot for the new Powers series, and Michael Oeming is working on visual development. Keith Goldberg and Christ Tongue from Dark Horse Entertainment are also producing the show.
What Is Powers About?
Powers is a unique series that combines the worlds of superheroes and police procedurals. It follows detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim as they investigate murders in a Chicago where people with superpowers are real – and sometimes, those powers are connected to the crimes they solve.
Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Oeming originally created Powers as a self-published comic in the early 2000s. It quickly gained recognition, moving to Image Comics and winning an Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2001. The series has been published on and off ever since, including a run with Marvel’s Icon imprint. Most recently, it returned with a 25th-anniversary series at Dark Horse Comics, which is now prioritizing adaptations of its comics into films and TV shows after being acquired by Embracer Group.
Power Was Previously Adapted Into Live-Action
The comic Powers was previously turned into a live-action TV show that ran for two seasons, from 2015 to 2016. It was first developed for the FX network, but ended up on Sony’s PlayStation Network as part of a short-lived effort to create a streaming service based on their gaming platform. Because it aired on such a specialized service, the show isn’t well-remembered now.
I truly believe Skybound’s shows prove people are really craving more mature, animated superhero content. Netflix has clearly found success with shows like Castlevania, Devil May Cry, and Arcane, but they don’t have many original superhero series right now. That’s why I think bringing something different and exciting like Powers to life as a new animated show for adults is a brilliant move for them.
Brian Michael Bendis is a highly productive comic book writer. He started with independent comics and then became one of Marvel’s most popular writers in the early 2000s. He first gained recognition for his gritty, detective-style work on Daredevil and for co-creating the character Jessica Jones in the Alias series. He quickly moved on to write Marvel’s biggest titles, including Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, and Uncanny X-Men.
Following a short time writing Superman for DC Comics, Brian Michael Bendis has returned to focusing on his personal projects, like the new Powers series. Plus, his graphic novel Torso is being made into a movie, with Weapons director Zach Cregger as a producer.
