Stephen King’s Sci-Fi Action Remake Flop Continues Streaming Redemption

Even though it didn’t do well in theaters, last year’s remake of the classic sci-fi thriller is now finding an audience on streaming services. This second adaptation of a popular novel by a famous horror author features more action and special effects, and it tells a darkly humorous story about a brutal world obsessed with reality TV – and, naturally, with death.

I’m really excited about this new movie! It’s directed by the guy who did Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz, and stars the actor who was amazing in Top Gun: Maverick. It’s a fresh take on a Stephen King story and a remake of the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film from the 80s, but honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag – some parts are great, others not so much.

Glen Powell, often compared to Tom Cruise, is proving to be a big draw for audiences with his new film, The Running Man. The action movie is currently the most-watched title on Paramount+ in the United States, beating out popular releases like Channing Tatum’s Roofman, the thriller Due Justice, and even Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick. Since its debut in January, The Running Man has consistently stayed in the top 10, showing it’s a hit with streaming viewers.

‘The Running Man’ Is an Action Thriller With a Satirical Edge

Starring William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, Sean Hayes, Jayme Lawson, Colman Domingo, Josh Brolin, and Glen Powell, The Running Man is a new take on the Stephen King story. Unlike the popular 1980s film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, this version stays much closer to the original novel.

In a not-so-distant future, the most popular show on TV is called The Running Man. It’s a brutal competition where people, called Runners, try to survive for 30 days while being hunted by trained killers – and the prize is a huge sum of money. Ben Richards, a working-class man desperate to help his ill daughter, enters the game as a final hope. He unexpectedly becomes a fan favorite because of his courage, resourcefulness, and determination, which starts to shake up the fragile world around him and makes him the most formidable contestant the show has ever seen.

‘The Running Man’ Bombed & Divided

Paramount Pictures

Despite the creative team of Edgar Wright and Glen Powell, and being based on a story by Stephen King, the movie The Running Man performed poorly in theaters. It earned only $69 million worldwide, failing to recoup its $110 million production budget.

The film was mostly criticized for its direction. While fans hoped for a dark, satirical adaptation of Stephen King’s story, the result was a fairly average (62% on Rotten Tomatoes) action movie that didn’t deliver the exciting, dynamic action usually seen in Edgar Wright’s work. However, audiences enjoyed it more, giving it a 78% score on the Popcornmeter and finding it to be a fun, at-home action movie.
