James Gunn Confirms Supergirl’s Timeline With Superman Movie & Man Of Tomorrow Sequel

Supergirl is certainly making an entrance, and James Gunn reveals exactly how.

James Gunn is currently the Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, a position he’s held since 2022. Before this, he was a writer and director at Marvel Studios, famous for the Guardians of the Galaxy films (2014-2023). Since joining DC, Gunn successfully brought Superman back to cinemas in 2025, earning over $600 million globally. He’s now working on two upcoming movies: Man of Tomorrow, slated for release on July 9, 2027, and Supergirl, scheduled for June 26, 2026.

A fan asked James Gunn on Threads about the timeline of the upcoming Supergirl movie in relation to Superman (2025) and Man of Tomorrow. The fan noted Gunn’s previous comments about wanting the DC Universe to resemble Star Wars, with stories happening within a set timeline but not necessarily chronologically, and wanted to know when Supergirl would fit in. Understanding the order of these three films could help fans follow the overall story as the release dates approach. Gunn responded with a concise answer.

“In between Superman and Man of Tomorrow.”

As a huge DC fan, I’m really excited about how they’re planning the movie order to build the official DC Universe timeline! It’ll kick off with Superman, then Supergirl, and Man of Tomorrow. I’ve heard Supergirl is going to be heavily inspired by the Woman of Tomorrow comic series, and it sounds amazing. Apparently, it’s going to star Milly Alcock as a more world-weary Kara Zor-El, teaming up with Eve Ridley’s character, a mercenary named Rthye Marye Knoll, on a revenge-fueled journey. From what I’ve gathered, they’re really going to explore a much darker, more complex side of Supergirl, which I think is a fantastic idea!

James Gunn previously contributed to DC Studios, writing and directing the 2021 film The Suicide Squad and then creating the highly-rated spin-off series Peacemaker, which boasts a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes. There’s a lot of excitement surrounding his upcoming Supergirl project, though the character of Kara Zor-El hasn’t seen as many adaptations as some fans would prefer.

The upcoming movie, Man of Tomorrow, promises an exciting team-up between Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) as they face a new danger. The villain, Brainiac (Lars Eidinger), is set to threaten the city of Metropolis, potentially by shrinking it.

Supergirl will be available to watch in theaters on June 26, 2026.
