Universal confirmed plans for in November 2025. Production is now set to begin shortly.
Radio Silence, the directing team consisting of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, recently revealed that filming for The Mummy 4 is scheduled to begin in August, with preparations starting in May.
The directors of the upcoming Mummy sequel, arriving 20 years after The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, promise plenty of action. They’ve hinted at a wide variety of cannons – including those that shoot blood and sand – suggesting they’ll be building on the violent style of their recent film.
The Mummy 4 Has an Unexpected Inspiration
The directors shared how working on the recent Scream movies (Scream 5 and Scream VI) prepared them for their upcoming The Mummy film. Bettinelli-Olpin said the experience gave them a good foundation, allowing them to balance respecting the original Mummy films with bringing new ideas to the table. They want to be mindful of the past while still creating something fresh and unique.
He explained that the challenge is to create something new and exciting that feels original, but doesn’t ignore what fans already love, and isn’t just relying on people’s fondness for the past. It needs to strike a balance between innovation and respecting the existing foundation.
Gillett mentioned that Scream VI heavily influenced their film, especially due to its quick pace and the way it was made – relying a lot on instinct and creative feeling rather than strict planning.
He said they’ve been able to spend more time planning the new Mummy movie, allowing for a more thorough preparation process. While the fast-paced, on-the-fly creative approach was stressful, it also led to some of the best ideas because they were able to make instinctive decisions instead of overanalyzing everything.
Gillett believes that, given all the preparation, it will be exciting to explore how to naturally incorporate gut feeling into the work.
Rachel Weisz Returns to The Mummy Universe
Universal’s reboot of the franchise brought Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz to the forefront. However, the third film proved to be the least popular, receiving poor reviews and earning less money than the previous installments. Maria Bello took on the leading role in that third movie.
When asked about Rachel’s involvement in the next film, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin confirmed she will be returning. Tyler Gillett jokingly added that should settle the speculation. Beyond the two main stars, the rest of the cast and the storyline are still secret.
The Mummy 4 opens in theaters on May 19, 2028.
