Invincible Season 4 Quietly Recasts An Original Character

Prime Video’s Invincible is a great show, and one of its biggest strengths is its incredible cast. The series stars Steven Yeun, Sandra Oh, J.K. Simmons, and Gillian Jacobs, with fantastic supporting performances from Mark Hamill, Walton Goggins, Sterling K. Brown, Seth Rogen, and Clancy Brown. What’s really remarkable is that even smaller roles are often played by well-known actors – past guest stars include Kate Mara, Ella Purnell, Jon Hamm, and Simu Liu, among others.

With such a large cast for Invincible, it’s not surprising that a few voice actors have been replaced during production. Todd Williams took over the role of Titan from Mahershala Ali, Eric Bauza replaced Ezra Miller as D.A. Sinclair, and Luke Macfarlane stepped in as Rick, originally played by Jonathan Groff. Because the show relies on voice acting, these changes aren’t always noticeable, especially when the new actors are skilled at mimicking voices.

In season 4 of Invincible, a character who’s been on the show since the beginning has quietly had their voice actor changed.

Zachary Quinto No Longer Voices Robot In Invincible Season 4

As a big fan of Invincible, I’ve always been fascinated by Robot. He’s such a complex character! He goes by a lot of names – Robot, Rudolph, Rudy, even Rex depending on the episode – and he’s been a core part of the show since season one. We’ve seen him build a new version of the Guardians of the Globe, and he’s just continued to be one of the main heroes. Over the seasons, he’s had a whole life – falling in love, completely rebuilding his body, leaving and then rejoining the Guardians, and even changing his name to honor a friend he lost. It’s been a really compelling arc to watch!

Robot is a complex character with many different sides, so multiple actors have typically been used to voice him. For the first three seasons of Invincible, Zachary Quinto provided the voice for Robot, and Ross Marquand voiced Rudy/Rex when he was outside of his robot suit.

Zachary Quinto, famous for playing the logical Spock in the Star Trek reboot, brought a similar calm, emotionless quality to the character of Robot. This perfectly captured both Rudy’s scientific way of thinking and the robotic sound of his orange suit. Using two voice actors – one for Robot and one for Rudy – helped create a distinction between the superhero persona and the boy inside. This made Robot seem more powerful as a member of the Guardians of the Globe, while also allowing Rudy to come across as more relatable and human.

In season 4 of Invincible, Ross Marquand voices the Robot character full-time, even when Rudy/Rex isn’t inside the suit. The change is subtle, as Marquand does a great job of sounding like Zachary Quinto, preserving the difference between Robot and Rudy/Rex. Marquand is incredibly versatile with his voice – while he’s famous for playing Aaron in The Walking Dead, he’s also a talented impressionist. He smoothly took over the role of Red Skull in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Hugo Weaving, and voices several other characters in Invincible, including The Immortal.

Why Zachary Quinto Isn’t In Invincible Season 4

Both Prime Video and Zachary Quinto haven’t said why he’s not in season 4 of Invincible, but the first three episodes show the story is now more about Rudy/Rex than the Robot. Since the Robot suit appears only briefly, it likely wasn’t worth bringing Quinto back for just a few lines, especially considering Ross Marquand does a great job voicing both sides of the character.

Zachary Quinto is currently the star of, and a producer on, NBC’s Brilliant Minds, which is currently airing its 20-episode second season.

Even though Quinto hasn’t formally left the show Invincible, his current absence doesn’t mean he’s gone for good. If the story requires the character Rudy/Rex to always be in his robot suit, Quinto could return to voice the role. For now, though, Ross Marquand will be the one bringing this small but powerful character to life, whether he’s in the suit or not.
