A critically acclaimed and unusual action thriller is currently topping streaming charts after winning awards at the Academy Awards. The film, directed by the celebrated filmmaker known for movies like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, and Phantom Thread, surprised audiences with its blend of dark comedy, satire, and thrilling action. Released last September, it was quickly hailed as one of the year’s best films.
Paul Thomas Anderson wrote, directed, and produced this film, which stars Academy Award and BAFTA winners Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro, along with Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti. Penn plays a disheveled, former revolutionary struggling with paranoia who must protect his daughter when someone from his past returns to cause trouble. He’s a far cry from the leading man we’re used to seeing!
After a successful night at the Academy Awards – where it won several prizes, including Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, Best Supporting Actor for Sean Penn, Best Casting, and Best Adapted Screenplay, culminating in the Best Picture award over films like F1, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, and Sinners – One Battle After Another is now a streaming hit worldwide and in the United States.
Dicaprio Battles Box Office Disaster to Find Streaming Success
The streaming series One Battle After Another is once again the most popular show worldwide. In the U.S., it’s a close second to Sinners, a potential competitor at the Oscars. Beyond that, One Battle After Another is currently number one on the Apple TV Store and is also a top 10 hit on Amazon.
Even though the movie was well-made and enjoyed by many, it surprisingly didn’t perform well in theaters. Despite having a famous lead actor, a strong supporting cast, and high ratings – 95% from critics and 85% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – One Battle After Another only earned about $210 million worldwide. This was a significant disappointment, as reports suggested it needed to make around $300 million to cover its costs.
People will likely continue to debate why One Battle After Another didn’t do well in theaters – the main issues were its huge budget and ineffective marketing. However, it’s clear there’s a real desire to see Paul Thomas Anderson and Leonardo DiCaprio create a unique and unusual action thriller.
This ‘One Battle After Another’ Star Is “Begging” for a Sequel…

Warner Bros.
Even though the movie One Battle After Another didn’t do well in theaters, Teyana Taylor, one of its stars, is still hopeful for a sequel. This is a bit of a change for Leonardo DiCaprio and director Paul Thomas Anderson, who have generally avoided making sequels. In fact, the upcoming Heat 2 will end DiCaprio’s long streak of not appearing in sequels. Taylor recently revealed she’s actively pushing for a follow-up to One Battle After Another, saying, “I’m literally begging PTA to make it happen.”
