Every ‘Jack Ryan’ TV Season & Movie, Ranked

As a critic, I’ve always been fascinated by Jack Ryan. Tom Clancy really nailed it with this character – a truly brilliant CIA analyst who constantly tells everyone he’s a desk job kind of guy. Of course, he then inevitably finds himself smack-dab in the middle of international chaos! It’s this constant push and pull – the ordinary man thrown into extraordinary circumstances – that really makes Jack Ryan such a compelling and beloved character. He’s always protesting, ‘I just write reports!’, but we all know better, don’t we?

Alec Baldwin first portrayed Jack Ryan in the 1990 film, The Hunt for Red October, a beloved Cold War thriller that remains popular today. Harrison Ford then became synonymous with the character in the early 1990s, starring in the strong thrillers Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Ben Affleck and Chris Pine each played Ryan in the following decades, continuing the franchise. However, the biggest shift came when Amazon Prime Video cast John Krasinski, a bold move that paid off. The resulting series was a streaming success, lasting four intense seasons and gaining a devoted following who were sad to see it end.

With a new Jack Ryan movie starring John Krasinski now officially happening, the series is returning to theaters. Think of this ranking of all the Jack Ryan seasons and films as a quick rundown before the next adventure begins.

9
‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’ (2014)

Paramount Pictures

Unlike other Jack Ryan films, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit isn’t based on a Tom Clancy novel, and it shows. Chris Pine stars as a young Jack Ryan who uncovers a Russian scheme to destabilize the U.S. economy by attacking its financial system. However, the movie doesn’t take many risks. Kenneth Branagh directs and also plays the villain, Viktor Cherevin, but his performance is overly dramatic and lacks impact. The film also suffers from a quickly developed romance with Keira Knightley and action sequences that feel generic for a spy thriller of its time.

The movie received a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics agreeing it doesn’t offer anything new to the action-thriller genre. Chris Pine delivers a strong and engaging performance, but the film falters by changing Jack Ryan’s character. Instead of the intelligent analyst he’s known as, he’s portrayed as a typical spy and field agent. When questioned about a possible follow-up movie, Pine’s blunt “No” speaks volumes about its prospects.

‘Jack Ryan’ Season 2 (2019)

Prime Video

The second season of Jack Ryan started with a promising idea: sending Jack to Venezuela with a senator on a diplomatic mission. While there, he uncovers a crumbling election, complicated by a dishonest president, a rising political opponent, and secret arms deals. Adding to the mix is Noomi Rapace as Harriet Baumann, a mysterious intelligence agent. The season also brings Wendell Pierce’s character, James Greer, back into the action after a reassignment from Moscow. The interactions between Ryan and Greer are the strongest part of the season.

The show’s portrayal of Venezuelan politics feels rather shallow. It also takes Jack Ryan into questionable territory, seemingly just to align with his backstory. The main villain, President Reyes, isn’t particularly interesting, and the constant cuts to him disrupt the flow, making this season feel less impactful and connected than previous ones. It’s not a terrible season, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark.

7
‘The Sum of All Fears’ (2002)

Paramount Pictures

Released shortly after the 9/11 attacks, the film The Sum of All Fears unfortunately came out at a time when its story felt too real and upsetting for many viewers. Adapted from Tom Clancy’s novel, the movie centers on a wealthy, extremist billionaire who attempts to start a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia. His plan involves a stolen nuclear bomb originally lost by Israel decades earlier after a crash in the Golan Heights.

Ben Affleck plays a younger version of the character, and because the film explores the character’s backstory, visual effects were used to make him appear younger. This naturally led to comparisons with Harrison Ford, who originally played the role. Affleck does a solid job, capturing the character’s confusion, drive, and determination, though he doesn’t quite match Ford’s strong sense of right and wrong. The movie is better than Shadow Recruit because it effectively builds tension once the nuclear danger becomes real, leading to a more focused and believable story. Ultimately, The Sum of All Fears is an enjoyable film, though it’s not particularly memorable.

‘Jack Ryan’ Season 4 (2023)

The last season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan had a tough job: to finish a four-year story and give Jack Ryan a good ending in only six episodes. Jack, now a high-ranking official at the CIA, discovers dishonesty within the agency while a dangerous drug cartel joins forces with a terrorist group. Luckily, the season’s brief length keeps things moving and avoids unnecessary scenes.

Michael Peña is fantastic as Chavez, and some viewers felt he even stole the show. While the return of Abbie Cornish as Cathy Mueller after a two-season absence felt a bit unnatural, Season 4 of Jack Ryan provides a satisfying ending to the series. Though it doesn’t quite reach the heights of Seasons 1 and 3, it’s still a strong conclusion, earning an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics agree it’s a smart, exciting, and effective season.

5
‘Jack Ryan’ Season 1 (2018)

Few predicted the actor best known from the comedy The Office would excel as Jack Ryan, but John Krasinski quickly proved everyone wrong. The first season centers on Ryan investigating unusual financial activity, which leads him to Mousa bin Suleiman, a Lebanese extremist plotting a major attack. What sets this show apart is its nuanced portrayal of the villain; Suleiman, played by Ali Suliman, is given a detailed and compelling backstory. This complexity moves the series beyond a typical post-9/11 thriller.

While the first season was a big success, especially for being a fresh start, it doesn’t quite reach the level of Season 3. It felt a bit overstuffed with storylines, and some plot threads were left hanging. However, the season’s strong points – like the connection between the characters Ryan and Suleiman, the exciting settings in Paris and the Middle East, and John Krasinski’s natural performance – made it a huge hit when it first aired in 2018. It also demonstrated that the world of Tom Clancy could work well as a longer, ongoing story.

4
‘Patriot Games’ (1992)

Paramount Pictures

When Alec Baldwin left the project to perform on Broadway, Harrison Ford took over the role, and it proved to be an excellent decision. Patriot Games is a well-made and engaging film. Unlike some of his other adventures, Jack Ryan isn’t saving the country this time – he’s focused on protecting his family. The story begins in London, where Ryan, now a professor at the US Naval Academy, happens upon a terrorist kidnapping of a royal family member. He manages to kill one of the kidnappers, who is later revealed to be the brother of a dangerous IRA extremist named Sean Miller.

The film builds suspense as Miller relentlessly tracks down Ryan, his wife, and daughter. Patriot Games was a box office hit, reaching number one for two weeks and earning $178.1 million globally. A key to its success is Harrison Ford’s performance; he portrays Ryan as genuinely disturbed by the events unfolding around him. Fans often debate whether Patriot Games or Clear and Present Danger is superior, and both films have strong points. While Patriot Games is tightly paced and assured, it’s slightly less grand in scope and its script isn’t quite as strong.

3
‘Clear and Present Danger’ (1994)

Paramount Pictures

John Ford returns as Jack Ryan in a more expansive and complicated story than his previous film, Patriot Games. In Clear and Present Danger, Ryan steps into the role of Deputy Director of Intelligence when his mentor, James Greer, is diagnosed with cancer. He uncovers a secret, unauthorized CIA operation targeting a Colombian drug cartel, approved at the highest levels of government, that has spiraled out of control.

The story revolves around a deep betrayal. Ryan isn’t just battling an outside threat; he’s also up against his own government as he uncovers a conspiracy and attempts to rescue soldiers left stranded in a jungle. Clear and Present Danger features a complex plot that reaches the highest levels of power, with bigger and more intense action sequences than previous films. It’s a much more involved story, and Ford delivers a compelling performance as a determined and intelligent character. While the movie is a bit lengthy and could benefit from some editing, it’s ultimately a rewarding watch and remains one of the most intricate Jack Ryan adventures.

2
‘Jack Ryan’ Season 3 (2022)

Prime Video

Season 3 of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan truly transforms the show into a classic spy thriller. Jack Ryan finds himself on the run, wrongly accused of being a traitor by the very agency he works for. He’s in a desperate race across Europe to stop a secret group from reviving Project Sokol, a dangerous Cold War plan to create nuclear weapons that can’t be detected by radar. This new direction, with Ryan as a fugitive, is a clever move. It removes his usual support network, forcing him to rely on his instincts and think on his feet.

James Cosmos was fantastic as Luka Gocharov, a mysterious Soviet agent whose true allegiance remains unclear throughout the series. Nina Hoss also shines as Czech President Alena Kovac, with a compelling storyline centered around her relationship with her father, played by Peter Guinness. John Krasinski gives a career-best performance. The beautiful filming locations – including Prague, Vienna, Rome, and Athens – give the season a truly cinematic feel. It’s a smart, thrilling, and action-packed story that’s both exciting and emotionally resonant.

1
‘The Hunt for Red October’ (1990)

As a huge movie fan, I still think the first Jack Ryan film, The Hunt for Red October, holds up incredibly well after 36 years. It’s truly one of the greatest political thrillers ever made. The film, based on Tom Clancy’s first novel, centers around Sean Connery’s amazing performance as a Soviet submarine captain who wants to defect. What really makes it work is the incredible tension and the delicate balance of diplomacy as Jack Ryan tries to figure out what Captain Ramius is up to, all while the world is dangerously close to nuclear war.

Despite being set mostly in enclosed spaces – underwater, in rooms, and around tables – The Hunt for Red October is consistently gripping. Alec Baldwin’s portrayal of Jack Ryan is compelling because he plays him not as a typical action hero, but as an intellectual historian racing against time with a crucial theory. In many ways, Baldwin’s Ryan is more complex and interesting than Harrison Ford’s, making a comparison between the two actors particularly engaging. The film rightfully earned an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing and continues to stand out as a high point for Jack Ryan movies and intelligent spy thrillers.
