Even with a very famous cast, the Apple TV thriller Imperfect Women took six years to get made.
I’m so excited about Imperfect Women! The cast is amazing – you’ve got Kerry Washington, Elisabeth Moss, Kate Mara, and a bunch of other fantastic actors like Corey Stoll and Joel Kinnaman. It’s based on this really gripping novel by Araminta Hall, and it’s about these three best friends – Eleanor, Mary, and Nancy – and all the secrets that come out when something terrible happens to one of them. Apple TV+ released the first two episodes on March 18th, and the whole series has eight episodes, so I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!
In a conversation with Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant for Imperfect Women, actress and executive producer Jessie Moss explained how she discovered the book years ago and immediately shared it with her producing partner, Lindsey McManus. This sparked a six-year effort to bring the story to the screen. Moss realized right away that she was the best choice to play Mary, even though she briefly thought about playing Eleanor or Nancy. Director Washington concurred, saying the role felt perfectly suited to Moss.
I picked up the book at the airport in 2019 while traveling for work. I was looking for something easy to read on the beach, and I immediately loved it. I sent it to my business partner, Lindsey, and asked if we should consider making a movie out of it – she said yes! It took six years to actually get the project off the ground, which is typical for this industry. I knew early on who I wanted to play the lead. I initially thought Eleanor or Nancy might be a good fit, but I realized I couldn’t see myself as Nancy. As soon as I got to the character of Mary, I knew that was the right choice.
It’s definitely Mary. She just felt—I don’t know—it just felt right.
Nancy gained prominence in society after marrying the wealthy Robert Kinnaman, while Eleanor is a career-focused single woman. Mary, married to college professor Howard Stoll, dedicates her time to raising their family. Like the other main characters, Mary is more complex than she appears, and her life takes unexpected turns as she uncovers hidden secrets kept by those close to her.
Critics are divided on the new show, giving it a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 18 reviews. While some reviewers find the story slow and disjointed, they consistently praise the strong acting, especially from the three lead actresses: Moss, Washington, and Mara. The show dedicates individual segments to each woman’s point of view, allowing viewers to understand their struggles with past trauma more fully.
Elisabeth Moss is returning to television in a new role called Imperfect Women. This marks her first project since finishing The Handmaid’s Tale in 2025, a show she starred in as June Osborne/Offred for six seasons, starting in 2016. Fans of that series can also look forward to a spinoff, The Testaments, which premieres on Hulu on June 8th. Moss is also an executive producer on The Testaments, and Ann Dowd will return as Aunt Lydia.
The first two episodes of Imperfect Women are now available on Apple TV, with new episodes dropping each week until April 29th.
