Fans have wanted a new Star Trek: The Next Generation spinoff, bringing back the original cast, for a long time. But Marina Sirtis, who played the beloved Deanna Troi, has now given up hope that the project, called Legacy, will actually happen.
During a recent Star Trek cruise, Marina Sirtis, along with other Star Trek: The Next Generation cast members, participated in a fan Q&A. When asked about a potential Star Trek: Legacy series, Sirtis immediately said she didn’t think it would ever happen. Jonathan Frakes, who played Will Riker, disagreed playfully, but Sirtis insisted that the original Next Generation cast is now too old to be considered for the project by Paramount.
Is Star Trek: Legacy Dead in the Water?
Marina Sirtis was direct: a continuation of Star Trek: The Next Generation – a ‘Legacy’ series – isn’t going to happen. She explained that no American studio would take the risk of making a show with a main cast largely composed of actors in their seventies, stating it’s simply a reality of how Hollywood operates.
The final season of Star Trek: Picard hinted at a possible continuation of the story, especially since it reunited most of the original Next Generation cast. While not officially confirmed, fans have begun referring to this potential new series as Star Trek: Legacy. It would likely follow the adventures of characters like Seven of Nine, Raffi Musiker, and Jack Crusher, picking up where Picard concluded.
The TNG Icons Could Be Recurring Stars
If the spinoff moves forward, it could create opportunities for more actors from Next Generation to appear, considering the show’s timeline. Besides Marina Sirtis and Jonathan Frakes, we might see guest spots from Patrick Stewart, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, and Wil Wheaton. While Sirtis raises a valid point about older actors taking on leading roles, these TNG stars wouldn’t have to be the main focus of the new series.
According to Brent Spiner, Terry Matalas was initially developing a Picard spin-off that wouldn’t have focused on the original Next Generation cast. However, the studio preferred to continue the series with Jeri Ryan and the newer actors introduced in Picard Season 3, envisioning them as the leads, with occasional appearances from the TNG cast. Spiner shared this information on The Sackhoff Show last year.
Spiner mentioned that a continuation of the ‘Legacy’ storyline was something he’d been interested in, and still believes is possible, particularly for Jeri Ryan’s character. He feels fans would enjoy seeing it, but acknowledged that those in charge of ‘Star Trek’ have other plans in mind.
Currently, the only confirmed future installment of Star Trek is Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, which is available to stream on Paramount+.
