Marvel Confirms Why Hulk Is Human Again In Spider-Man Brand New Day

Bruce Banner, the scientist who previously combined his intelligence with the Hulk’s strength to become Smart Hulk in Avengers: Endgame, appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day looking quite different. Fans last saw him as the fully-formed Smart Hulk in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, where his two personalities were permanently merged. While set photos hinted he’d appear as a regular professor in the Spider-Man film, the reason for his human form wasn’t initially known.

The recently released trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day reveals a surprising sight: Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner is shown as fully human, dressed in everyday clothes and teaching a class, seemingly at Empire State University. Notably, he’s wearing a small device on his wrist.

The device seen in the trailer is called the Hulk Inhibitor. It first appeared in a scene after the credits of the movie Shang-Chi. In that scene, Bruce Banner was human, with his arm in a sling – an injury he sustained while using the Infinity Stones in Endgame. He also wore it in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series. Seeing it on Banner’s wrist now explains how he was able to change back from his Smart Hulk form before his upcoming appearance in Brand New Day.

Bruce Banner created the Hulk Inhibitor as a way to control his transformations. The device lowers the gamma radiation in his system, allowing him to turn back into human form and heal injuries that the Hulk’s strength would normally prevent from recovering.

At the beginning of She-Hulk, Banner explained to his cousin, Jennifer Walters, while they were driving, that he’d built the device because becoming Smart Hulk meant he could no longer naturally change back into Bruce Banner. The merging of Hulk and Banner was now permanent, and the device was the only way for him to return to his human form.

Unfortunately, the device didn’t survive long. While on a road trip, a spaceship from Sakaar unexpectedly appeared, causing a collision. The crash damaged the inhibitor, which caused Banner to transform into Smart Hulk. In the resulting confusion, some of his gamma-irradiated blood entered Jen’s system, turning her into She-Hulk.

Okay, so I was rewatching the Brand New Day trailer, and something definitely caught my eye. The device Bruce Banner is wearing isn’t the same one we saw him shatter before. The original looked like a full gauntlet on his left arm, but this new version? It’s much smaller, a redesigned unit on his right wrist. It’s pretty clear Banner’s been back in the lab, tinkering and upgrading things between the events of She-Hulk and what we’re seeing in Brand New Day. It’s a subtle change, but a cool detail for those of us paying attention!

How Big Will Bruce Banner’s Impact Be in Spider-Man 4?

It will be fascinating to see how long Bruce Banner manages to maintain control of his Hulk side in Brand New Day. The trailer suggests he’s found a peaceful life as a teacher, seemingly free from the usual struggles. He clearly values this newfound normalcy and peace of mind, but it’s likely things won’t stay calm for long as the story unfolds, and he’ll be a key player in the events to come.

Peter rushes to Bruce with a frightening problem: his DNA is changing rapidly and dangerously. This immediately puts a strain on Bruce, threatening to disrupt the calm life he’s built. As he gets more involved in helping Peter, the risk of chaos increases, and inevitably, that means the Hulk will reappear, too.

In the upcoming film Brand New Day, Peter is a scientist who wants to make things better, but danger is quickly increasing. The trailer reveals that a dangerous ninja group called the Hand is targeting Peter and Damage Control as they become caught up in the unfolding events. Peter will face numerous life-or-death scenarios, meaning he’ll need significant assistance to overcome the challenges ahead.

Bruce Banner will probably be more than just a scientific helper to Peter, potentially fighting alongside him. However, it’s also possible Bruce could need Peter’s help – if the Hulk loses control, Peter might be the only one who can stop him. Either way, Bruce Banner’s presence in Brand New Day, both as himself and as the Hulk, will be very important.
