‘Bloodsport’ Reimagining Is Happening With Michaela Coel & A24

A remake of a popular Jean-Claude Van Damme martial arts film from the 1980s is currently being developed. The original movie has gained a dedicated following over the years and recently found new popularity with streaming audiences. This new version will bring the intense world of underground fighting to a new generation.

Okay, so this is huge news for anyone who loves a good martial arts flick! A24 is doing a remake of Bloodsport – the original with Jean-Claude Van Damme, where he’s an army captain fighting in this secret, brutal tournament in Hong Kong. And get this – Michaela Coel, the amazing writer and actress from I May Destroy You, is not only writing the script but directing it too! I’m really curious to see how she’ll put her spin on the story, and how much of the original they’ll keep. She put out a statement about it, which is pretty exciting, but right now, details are still pretty scarce.

I’ve always admired fighters and been amazed by the dedication, strength, and personal sacrifice required in their sport. I’m thrilled to delve into this world, and even more excited to be doing it with A24. Let’s do this!

It’s still unclear exactly how Michaela Coel’s version of Bloodsport will differ from the original, but the project is definitely being led by a creative and enthusiastic filmmaker. Coel is writing and directing the film, and it will be produced by Marc Toberoff (known for Predator: Badlands) with Stuart Manashil (To Catch a Killer) and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers. Toberoff expressed his enthusiasm for the remake, hinting at a return of the fast-paced combat tournament to cinemas.

The 1988 film Bloodsport really put mixed martial arts on the map with its raw, energetic style, and I’m excited to recreate that exciting tournament feel in a new movie.
