James Gunn’s New DCU Superhero Show Gets An Update After Cancellation Rumors

With ongoing speculation about the DC Universe franchise, details are now confirmed about one of the most awaited superhero TV series from DC Studios.

Recent reports suggest the live-action Booster Gold series has been cancelled. This speculation arose after showrunner David Jenkins removed posts about the show from his social media and reportedly stopped following James Gunn on Instagram.

Someone asked actor Todd Jenkins on Threads if he had left the upcoming Booster Gold TV series for the DC Universe. He responded that, to his knowledge, the project is still moving forward. Interestingly, Jenkins is currently following James Gunn on both Instagram and Threads.

James Gunn announced in July 2025 that Taika Waititi, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, would be writing the pilot episode for the DCU’s Booster Gold TV show. There haven’t been many updates about the series since then, but it hasn’t been cancelled.

Booster Gold was announced as an upcoming project by DC Studios in January 2023 as part of their new DCU plans. For the past two years, rumors have circulated that Kumail Nanjiani would play the lead role, but this hasn’t been officially confirmed.

The series Booster Gold focuses on Michael Jon Carter, a superhero from the 25th century who travels to the present day. Once a talented football player, he’s fallen from grace and uses future technology to reinvent himself as the hero Booster Gold, seeking a different kind of fame.

While Dan Jurgens’ Booster Gold series is in development, DC Studios is also working on Paradise Lost, a prequel to Wonder Woman, and a spin-off series featuring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The next live-action show from James Gunn’s DC Universe will be Lanterns, set to debut on HBO in August.

Booster Gold, if it goes forward, would most likely air on HBO Max.
