The Legend of Zelda series has had its share of successes and failures in the past forty years, and one game that still sparks a lot of debate is Skyward Sword. Interestingly, many believe it’s actually one of the very best Zelda games ever made, thanks to its compelling story and enjoyable gameplay.
Regardless of your opinion, this game is a key element of the overall franchise, and its availability on both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 is definitely positive.
Many players have consistently said the game doesn’t look its best when played in handheld mode on the Switch 2. While some hoped for a visual upgrade specifically for handheld play, it doesn’t seem like that will happen in the near future.
Does Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Get A Boost On Switch 2?

A recent post on Reddit pointed out that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD won’t benefit from the rumored performance boost the next Nintendo Switch console is expected to offer in handheld mode. This means the game will run at the same speed and quality whether played on a TV or in handheld/tabletop mode – it won’t get any extra power when played on the go.
Adding those features would have fixed most player complaints about the handheld version of the game, but sadly, it doesn’t look like Skyward Sword will receive that update in the foreseeable future. While the stated reason is control-related difficulties, it feels like a weak justification for what would be a significant and noticeable improvement.
Zelda Fans Are Disappointed By This Switch 2 Update
In a discussion about potential problems with Skyward Sword on the Switch 2, many players immediately expressed their frustration with the game Nintendo released.
Many players are frustrated that a recently released game doesn’t perform as well on the newest Nintendo console compared to the older model, especially considering how long the new console has been available. One commenter said it’s strange to charge full price for an experience that’s actually worse, even though Nintendo is currently prioritizing new game releases.
People are wondering why SSHD isn’t functioning correctly and what “control issues” means in this situation. One person pointed out that Skyward Sword HD definitely uses button controls.
This isn’t ideal, but many other games are receiving the Handheld Boost, so for now, we’ll have to stick to playing Skyward Sword on our TVs whenever we can.
