The CBS series is becoming increasingly popular on Paramount+, climbing the streaming charts as it approaches the end of its second season. This is happening at a time when the show’s future beyond the current season is unclear.
Currently, the show Watson is the fifth most popular title on Paramount+ in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. After first airing on CBS last year, Season 2 premiered in October 2025. Whether the show will be renewed for a third season is still uncertain, but its recent popularity on Paramount+ is a good sign.
Will Watson Be Renewed for Season 3?
It’s still uncertain whether the show will be renewed for a third season, and it might face challenges. While Season 2 averaged 2.5 million viewers per episode, that’s about half the number who watched Season 1. Though changes to when episodes aired may have contributed to the drop, the series, based on Sherlock Holmes and featuring Watson, is currently CBS’s lowest-rated scripted program.
The show Watson hasn’t been well-received by critics, which makes its renewal uncertain. It currently has a 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and viewers seem to dislike it even more, with a score of just 34%. While CBS might consider a third season to try and improve things, it’s unlikely the show will be back – unfortunately.
Watson Puts a Twist on the Sherlock Holmes Stories
The show, created by Craig Sweeny, updates the classic Sherlock Holmes stories for a modern audience. It centers on Morris Chestnut as Dr. John Watson, who is now a doctor and detective at the Holmes Clinic in Pittsburgh. He uses the skills he learned working with Sherlock Holmes to help patients with unusual medical cases.
The show features Eve Harlow as Dr. Ingrid Derian, Peter Mark Kendall playing the twin doctors Stephens and Adam Croft, Inga Schlingmann as Dr. Sasha Lubbock, Richie Coster as Shinwell Johnson, and Rochelle Aytes as Dr. Mary Morstan. Randall Park appeared as Professor James Moriarty in season one, and Rachel Hayward, Tika Sumpter, and Margot Bingham return as recurring characters in season two.
Besides Watson, the CBS comedy DMV is also facing potential cancellation. CBS has already renewed several shows for the 2026-27 season, including NCIS, FBI, Tracker, Matlock, Fire Country, and Sheriff Country. A new crime drama debuting this fall, which centers on Albert Einstein’s great-grandson, could take Watson’s timeslot if that show isn’t picked up for another season.
Watson can be streamed on Paramount+.
