According to a new report, Disney’s upcoming Tron: Ares originally planned to use AI in the movie.
How was Tron: Ares going to use AI?
According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, it appears that Disney had considered integrating artificial intelligence prior to the start of the movie’s production.
Because the storyline of Tron: Ares featured an AI-created solider moving into the physical world, it’s said that executives proposed integrating artificial intelligence with one of the movie’s characters. The report hints at a character named Bit, who would have been animated in the film.
In the narrative, the account indicates that a writer employed a conversational AI software to provide relevant information to the character played by Jeff Bridges. This AI, voiced by an actor, would interact with Bridges during filming in response to his queries.
According to the report, although Disney initially contemplated this plan, they were simultaneously engaging in negotiations with writers’ and actors’ unions. Ultimately, Disney abandoned the idea due to internal concerns about potential negative publicity surrounding the integration of AI into their films.
Tron: Ares, featuring an impressive cast including Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, Jeff Bridges, and Sarah Desjardins, is all set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025.
Tron: Ares is the third movie in Disney’s Tron series, following 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. The new film is directed by Joachim Rønning, who has previously worked on Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and Young Woman and the Sea (2024). He also co-directed Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales with Espen Sandberg in 2017. The script for Tron: Ares was written by Jesse Wigutow.
