DC Comics Brings Back Supergirl, Superman, and Batman In New Elseworlds Stories

Comic book fans love getting the next issue in a series they enjoy, but it’s also great when a story offers something different from the usual plot. And right now, there’s a lot to be excited about in that regard.

DC Comics is launching three new Elseworlds series in the summer of 2026. Two of these stories will explore different versions of Superman’s Kryptonian origins.

Written by Ethan S. Parker and Griffin Sheridan, the team behind the Eisner-nominated comic Kill Your Darlings, and featuring artwork by Rod Reis (known for his work on New Mutants), comes a new Supergirl story called Supergirl: Survive. The series tells the story of a young Kara Zor-El who becomes the guardian of her baby cousin, Kal-El, as they flee their doomed home planet.

DC previously suggested the new Elseworlds title would be connected to their Summer of Supergirl event, which includes the release of a new project and the Milly Alcock-starring movie, scheduled for June 26, 2026. But this season won’t just feature one version of Superman; readers can expect to see other Supermen as well.

This summer, a new Superman story called Superman: Father of Tomorrow will be released. It focuses on Clark Kent’s father, Jor-El. Written by Kenny Porter, who also writes Superboy, and illustrated by Danny Earls, known for his work on Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk, the story reimagines Jor-El’s escape from Krypton as the sole survivor when the planet is destroyed.

Jor-El’s ship lands in a small Kansas town, and he’s welcomed by a warm-hearted couple who unknowingly prepare him for his future mission to protect the planet. He uses not only his incredible powers, but also his brilliant mind, to help people on Earth.

DC’s Upcoming Elseworlds Line-Up Includes A Sequel

Fans are really enjoying this fresh perspective on familiar characters, and one particularly popular story will continue as part of DC’s Elseworlds line in 2026.

Tom Taylor, the writer of the popular series Dark Knights of Steel, is back with a sequel! The original series ran from late 2021 to early 2023 and paired Superman and Batman in a unique way. This new 12-issue comic continues their story, reimagining the classic ‘World’s Finest’ team-up as a partnership between Superman and a knighted Batman within a medieval fantasy world.

While the story for Dark Knights of Steel II is still a secret, the cover art suggests we’ll see characters like Wonder Woman and Aquaman. Yasmine Putri, who illustrated the original comic, is back to design the covers, but Otto Schmidt—known for his work on DC vs. Vampires—is taking over as the main artist.

The comic series Dark Knights of Steel has been expanded with two additional stories. Dark Knights of Steel: Tales from the Three Kingdoms, released in 2022, is a prequel that explores the early adventures of characters like Bruce and Kal-El. Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter, published between 2024 and 2025, centers on alternate versions of Deathstroke and Swamp Thing, and also reveals the origins of Aquaman in this particular universe.

New comic books are coming soon! Superman: Father of Tomorrow #1 will be available on May 27, 2026, both in stores and digitally. Supergirl: Survive #1 follows on June 3, 2026, and Dark Knights of Steel II begins on July 15, 2026.
