Bob Iger, who led the Walt Disney Company for many years, is stepping down this week, and new leaders are taking over. While financial leaders helped choose Josh D’Amaro as his successor, they also appointed Dana Walden – a close friend of Kamala Harris – to oversee all media and entertainment, hoping to ease concerns from those in Hollywood and the creative community. Now, Walden is taking action that may worry those same financial leaders who want Disney to avoid controversial content, particularly for children.
Enter Debra OConnell.
Disney is reorganizing its entertainment divisions – including streaming, movies, television, and games – and bringing them all together under Dana Walden, who will be President and Chief Creative Officer. Debra O’Connell will lead television for Disney Entertainment as its new Chairman.

As a longtime observer of Disney, I’ve been following the recent restructuring closely, and it’s clear they’re placing a lot of trust in Debra O’Connell. She’s a Disney veteran – nearly three decades in the business, mostly on the TV side – and as of March 2026, she’s taking on a huge new role as Chairman of Disney Entertainment Television. Essentially, she’s now in charge of all of Disney’s U.S. television output. That means everything from ABC shows and Disney Channel content to Hulu Originals, FX, and even National Geographic. She’s also still overseeing ABC News. It’s a massive portfolio, and she’ll be reporting to Dana Walden, who’s been promoted as part of this shift with Bob Iger stepping back and Josh D’Amaro taking the reins. It’s a significant power move, and I’m eager to see how O’Connell shapes Disney’s television future.
So, Debra O’Connell must be a very important executive to be given this new role directly under Dana Walden. She’s now responsible for all of Disney’s news programming, original TV shows—including those on streaming services—and basically all media content except for movies and video games.
I recently found out something interesting about O’Connell. It turns out she’s worked with GLSEN and GLAAD before – I checked her LinkedIn – and they collaborated on projects specifically focused on children. It definitely raised some questions for me.

GLSEN strongly supports the Safe Schools Improvement Act and is working to make it federal law. However, some critics argue this legislation could unintentionally lead to a requirement for all students, regardless of gender assigned at birth, to be allowed to participate in any sport, potentially harming opportunities for female athletes.
States receiving funding through this program must ensure all local school districts implement the following requirements.
“(1) Establish policies that prevent and prohibit conduct, including bullying and harassment, that—
This means a student is prevented from taking part in, or getting help from, school programs or activities.
— Congressional Record
Disney is reportedly shifting away from controversial social and political topics in its family-friendly programming. However, Dana Walden recently promoted someone whose views appear to clash with the company’s financial objectives.
I’m really excited about the changes happening at Disney! It sounds like they’re bringing all the TV brands together under one leader as part of a bigger plan to combine streaming, studios, TV, and even games into one big entertainment group. I read the memo from O’Connell, and she really stressed how important teamwork is – she talked about how amazing it is to work with so many talented people at Disney and how inspired she is by the creativity around here. She also said she feels energized and honored to be working with the team that’s building the future through stories, which is awesome to hear!

She will now directly manage several key executives, including Craig Erwich, who is expanding his role to oversee 20th Television in addition to ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals. Other direct reports include Ayo Davis (Disney Branded Television), Courteney Monroe (National Geographic Content), and Rita Ferro (who leads advertising sales for television). The heads of ABC News and stations, Almin Karamehmedovic and Chad Matthews, will continue in their current roles.
O’Connell began her career in sales and marketing at ABC Radio before moving to Disney’s television division in 1999. Over time, she advanced through various positions, gaining experience in areas like local station management, national advertising sales, and overall operations.
- Early roles (1999–2014): Vice President of Marketing at WABC-TV; various sales and marketing positions.
- 2014–2017: President, National TV Sales, ABC Owned Stations Group.
- ~2017–2018: Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Disney|ABC consolidated advertising sales group (involved in major ad sales restructuring across ABC, Freeform, and Disney Channels).
- 2018–~2020/2021: President and General Manager of WABC-TV New York (the #1-rated local station in the U.S.). She maintained its dominance in viewership, managed ancillary businesses and the syndicated show Live with Kelly and Ryan (later Live with Kelly Ripa), and launched innovative connected TV (CTV) apps to bridge traditional broadcast and digital audiences.
- Post-2020 network leadership: Promoted to oversee Disney’s network business operations and P&L responsibilities for properties including ABC, Disney Channels, FX, Freeform, and National Geographic.
- February 2024: Elevated to President, ABC News Group & Disney Entertainment Networks (also called President, News Group and Networks). This combined ABC News, ABC Owned Television Stations, and broader network business strategy under one vertical to adapt to digital and streaming platforms. She integrated ABC News Live into the Disney+ bundle (boosting engagement) and navigated challenges like the $15 million settlement with then-President-elect Donald Trump over on-air comments by George Stephanopoulos. ABC News President and stations leadership reported to her.
O’Connell is deeply involved in industry and community organizations:
- Chairman of the Board, TVB (Television Bureau of Advertising; earlier executive board member).
- Leadership roles at IRTS Foundation (Chairman 2018–2021, Vice Chairman earlier, now Ex-Officio; focused on access, education, and diversity for future media leaders).
- Advisory Board Member, Ryan Seacrest Foundation.
- Board Member, The Broadway Association.
- Advisory Board, League of Women Voters NYC.
- Active supporter of Disney Voluntears and civil rights/social action initiatives.
She’s been featured on prestigious lists like Variety500 and CableFax’s Most Powerful Women in Cable, acknowledging her significant impact in the television industry. Her experience includes work on both traditional TV and streaming platforms, and she’s proven her ability to lead at all levels, from local initiatives to national projects.

Disney isn’t likely to stop including social and political themes in its family-friendly shows and movies anytime soon. Dana Walden, a politically aware leader at Disney, is building a team that will allow the company to easily return to those types of messages when the time is right. Political and financial landscapes can change quickly, and with Walden also in charge of ABC News, Disney has the means to shape the narrative as needed.
