Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities was a successful Netflix horror anthology, and one of its biggest achievements was demonstrating that H.P. Lovecraft’s stories can be effectively adapted for television and film. For years, filmmakers have struggled to bring the work of the often-controversial horror author H.P. Lovecraft to the screen.
H.P. Lovecraft is hugely influential in the horror genre, inspiring writers and filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro and Stephen King with his distinctive style. However, he was also deeply prejudiced – even for the standards of his era – and his stories contain troubling and offensive elements despite being well-written.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Successfully Adapted Two Lovecraft Stories
Let me tell you, adapting Lovecraft is tough. Even putting aside the problematic aspects of the author himself, his brand of horror just doesn’t easily translate to film. He basically invented ‘cosmic horror,’ focusing on things so terrifying and beyond our understanding that just seeing them would break a person’s mind. And honestly, showing that kind of existential dread on screen? It’s a real challenge, and rarely works as well as it does in the original stories.
Despite the challenges of adapting H.P. Lovecraft’s work, Netflix’s horror series, Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, successfully does so. The show’s adaptations of “Dreams in the Witch House” and “Pickman’s Model” skillfully blend what’s shown on screen with what’s suggested, preserving the distinctive atmosphere of Lovecraftian horror.
Netflix’s horror series demonstrates that adapting the works of H.P. Lovecraft can be done successfully. Some thought it was impossible, but the show proves it works best with shorter, independent stories. This format allows for dramatic, frightening events – even characters going insane or dying – without impacting a larger, ongoing plot. Because each episode is self-contained, they deliver a truly satisfying and scary experience, unlike some previous attempts.
While the first two episodes closely follow Lovecraft’s stories, you’ll quickly realize that nearly all of Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities uses a similar style of horror. The very first episode, “Lot 36,” directed by Del Toro himself, is heavily inspired by Lovecraft, showing a terrifying supernatural world without revealing too much about its mysteries.
I was really intrigued by Panos Cosmatos’s episode, “The Viewing.” He’s known for films like Mandy, and while this was definitely more comedic and over-the-top than his usual work, it still fit perfectly with the show’s overall Lovecraftian horror vibe. The thing they’re watching in the episode is so unbelievably terrifying that it fundamentally changes how everyone perceives reality – it’s a classic Lovecraftian idea, but delivered with a surprisingly dark sense of humor.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities Offers A Perfect Venue For Future Lovecraft Adaptations
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities is a surprisingly good anthology series. It’s particularly clever because it offers a great way for directors to adapt the work of H.P. Lovecraft, a notoriously difficult author to bring to the screen. Instead of trying to fully show Lovecraft’s huge and frightening creatures, the show wisely offers only brief, unsettling hints of his terrifying world, and that’s what makes it work so well.
This horror series suggests a terrifying world exists just beneath our own, capable of shattering reality and driving people to insanity. Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities demonstrates that adapting the works of H.P. Lovecraft isn’t about direct translation, but rather a smart, subtle touch.
