Why Hulu’s ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival Was Cancelled

Nearly a decade ago, we met a teenage girl navigating life, love, and friendship—with a supernatural twist. She explored a cemetery, connected with new people, and fell for a captivating stranger, all while trying to fit in. But her life wasn’t typical: she secretly battled vampires, which put things like school and social drama into perspective. Eventually, she discovered she had a much bigger role to play – saving the world – and wrestled with the weight of that responsibility.

The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, which started in 1997, was a captivating blend of action, emotion, and humor. Throughout its seven seasons, viewers fell in love with Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her combination of intelligence and power. When a revival was announced on Hulu, fans eagerly speculated about which beloved characters might not return and who we could expect to see. Though a release date remained unknown, many hoped a new slayer would appear on television relatively soon.

Sadly, Hulu has decided to cancel the planned Buffy: New Sunnydale revival. The project had a lot of promising people working on it, including writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, director Chloé Zhao, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was set to play the new Slayer, Nova. Let’s explore the reasons behind Hulu’s decision and consider if there’s any chance we’ll see Buffy fighting vampires again in the future.

Why Did Hulu Cancel the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival?

On March 14, 2026, Sarah Michelle Gellar shared a video on Instagram announcing that Hulu had decided not to move forward with the planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She explained that:

I’m very sorry to announce that Hulu won’t be continuing with the Buffy: New Sunnydale series. I wanted to let you all know directly.

It’s unclear why Hulu decided to move away from the planned Buffy reboot. However, Deadline reported concerns had been growing for weeks about the pilot episode. According to sources, director Zhao’s vision didn’t quite align with the show, and the pilot wasn’t considered fully polished.

It’s disappointing to hear the project won’t move forward, given Zhao’s talent. Her films are visually striking, and her recent movie, Hamnet, tells a powerful story. Even though her 2021 film, Eternals, wasn’t a hit with everyone, it showed she can successfully work in different genres like science fiction. While Buffy and Hamnet are quite different, both explore themes of love, family, and loss – particularly evident in the heartbreaking Season 5 episode of the original series, “The Body.” Zhao clearly put a lot of thought into the pilot, and it would have been fascinating to see how Buffy and Nova interacted and if the new villains could have matched the fun of the original show. Hopefully, the revival wouldn’t have been as emotionally difficult to watch as Hamnet. But with the original Buffy offering a meaningful message of empowerment beyond typical young adult stories, Zhao’s involvement felt really exciting.

Reboots and revivals often fail because they lack a strong creative direction. Simply trying to satisfy fans or relying on nostalgia isn’t enough. For a show like Buffy: New Sunnydale to succeed, it needs talented and imaginative people leading the way, and many were eager to see what Zhao’s unique take on the project would be.

Could the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival Still Happen?

Hulu isn’t giving up on bringing back Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Deadline reports they’re still exploring options for a new show, and we might hear about a potential pilot with a new creative team soon. Given the enduring popularity of Buffy and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s enthusiasm, it seems likely a revival could happen eventually.

Zhao addressed the cancellation while on the red carpet at the 2026 Academy Awards. As reported by Variety, she stated:

We’ve always focused on staying true to the show and our fans, and we believe everything happens for a reason. We’re staying positive and open to whatever the future holds.

Someone asked if Charisma Carpenter and Sarah Michelle Gellar and I might shop our pilot around to other streaming services, and I just said, “Let the speculation begin!” Honestly, while Hulu could decide to revive Buffy at some point, the most important thing is that Sarah Michelle and I are still really excited about working together on this project, whatever happens.

The ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Revival Sounded Compelling and Promising

The WB

It’s easy to wonder what would have happened if Hulu hadn’t canceled the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival. It likely would have received both good and bad reactions, but the idea itself wasn’t bad – especially considering how reboots and revivals often work. A smart strategy is sometimes simply introducing a new, younger character who carries on the spirit of the original fans already love.

I’ve been following the buzz about the potential revival, and honestly, I’m intrigued by Nova. I know some fans want to keep everything exactly as it was in the ’90s, and others are wary of new faces, but Ryan Kiera Armstrong seems like a really strong choice. I’ve seen her in things like Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and the recent Firestarter remake, and she’s seriously talented. I think she could absolutely carry the show with the same energy and charisma that Sarah Michelle Gellar brought to the original.

Honestly, I’m always up for a show with a clever, self-assured young woman at the center – especially one who’s trying to make a difference, you know, like a modern take on a classic heroine. But I really hope this new show, ‘Nova,’ doesn’t just feel like a copy of something we’ve seen before. I’m excited to see her become her own character and go on her own unique adventure, and it’s a shame we might not even get the chance to find out who she really is.

All we can do now is rewatch episodes of Buffy and hope the show returns to television someday, with Buffy continuing to fight vampires and deliver witty lines. We’d be thrilled if Sarah Michelle Gellar were part of any revival.
