As a huge fan of Firefly, I have to admit the news of the animated revival is… complicated. It’s exciting to see the show come back in some form, but it’s definitely split the fanbase. I get it – Firefly is special. But honestly, it’s not totally out of left field. Doctor Who is going animated too, and that’s a sci-fi institution. Seeing Mal Reynolds as a cartoon is just… different. It’ll be interesting to see how it works, but it’s definitely a bold move!

Bringing back the cast of Firefly as animated versions of their characters is the most practical way to revive the show. The original actors are now much older than they were during the show’s single season, and sadly, one of them, Ron Glass who played Shepherd Book, is no longer with us.

Any attempt to bring back the classic space Western needs to honor its status as one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made. While an animated reboot will inevitably involve some changes, it’s a much simpler way to stay true to the original Firefly story than trying to revive it as a live-action series.

Firefly Season 2 Will Be An Animated Reboot

The news that Firefly is being revived with the original actors has quickly become a huge hit online. Fans are thrilled, especially considering the show was canceled after just one incomplete season 23 years ago, and it’s been over two decades since anyone saw the characters in a live-action movie or series.

The new Firefly series will be animated, which avoids the challenge of reuniting the original actors after so many years. While some longtime fans are excited about its return in any form, others were hoping for a live-action continuation of the show.

It’s likely a cartoon version of Firefly won’t capture the exciting visual style of the original show’s space battles. However, the people making the reboot have several good reasons for choosing animation.

The Controversial Decision To Reboot Firefly As An Animated Series Makes Sense

While Disney is busy remaking its classic animated films with realistic visuals, and many animated webcomics are becoming live-action shows on Netflix, a cartoon adaptation of Firefly feels different. But then again, this groundbreaking space western always did things its own way.

Bringing back Firefly as an animated series is a cost-effective way to continue the story, as it only requires the original actors to provide voices. The show can pick up at any point in the Firefly universe’s timeline. This new animated version will actually take place between the original Fox television season and the 2005 film Serenity.

It won’t matter if the original actors look different after 23 years. Also, even though Ron Glass sadly passed away, his character, Derrial Book, can still be featured by using a different voice actor, appearance isn’t important in that case.

Because the new animated series takes place before the movie Serenity within the Firefly universe, Alan Tudyk is able to return as his popular character, Hoban “Wash” Washburne, who tragically dies at the end of Serenity. Also, since voice acting requires less time than filming a live-action show, the original cast members were all able to participate.

Doctor Who Also Recently Announced Its Own Animated Spinoff

The team working on the new Firefly series can take heart from the fact that an animated Doctor Who show is currently in the works. While Doctor Who has been animated before, this will be the first time the series has received a full animated TV show treatment.

We got a taste of what this show might be like from the 2007 and 2009 webtoons, The Infinite Quest and Dreamland. Plus, animated episodes from the 1960s, rediscovered in the BBC archives, have always thrilled fans. However, the new cartoon being made by Blue Zoo Animation Studio is something completely different.

This new cartoon will be the first to bring original Doctor Who stories to life through animation on television. Currently planned for production in late 2026, the animated series is expected to debut in 2027, around the same time as the return of the original cast of Firefly.
