Stephen Lang is a fantastic actor who didn’t become widely known until later in his career. Though he’s been working since the early 1980s, he finally achieved a major breakthrough in 2009 with his role as Col. Miles Quaritch.

While many remember the actor for his iconic role as the villainous veteran – a part he’s played several times in James Cameron’s popular sci-fi films – whether it’s his best performance is up for debate. Some fans actually believe his powerful, but often overlooked, work in the thriller VFW is where he truly shines.

VFW Is A Bloody, Explosive Standoff

Joe Begos is a filmmaker who’s gained recognition for his horror movies, including the exciting vampire film Bliss (2019) and the darkly humorous Christmas Bloody Massacre (2022), about a woman terrorized by a killer robot Santa. But many consider his best work to be VFW, an action thriller that still feels like a horror movie at its core.

The film, released in 2020, takes place in a version of America where the police have given up trying to control drugs and crime is out of control, with gangs constantly fighting. On one particular night, Fred Parras, a veteran of the Vietnam War (played by Stephen Lang), is celebrating his birthday with his old army friends at the VFW hall he runs. The group includes actors William Sadler, Fred Williamson, Martin Kove, and George Wendt.

The celebration takes a dark turn when a young woman, fleeing a dangerous drug lord and his violent crew, seeks shelter in the bar with a hidden supply of a highly addictive drug. The bar’s older patrons, all veterans, must then unite to defend themselves and try to make it through the night.

The screenplay by Max Brallier and Matthew McArdle feels like a fresh, updated take on John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, which itself was inspired by Rio Bravo. However, it’s even more intense and features significantly more violence. With director Joe Begos’ distinctive visual flair – particularly his use of natural and neon lighting – and its relentless, brutally honest action, VFW is a throwback to classic B-movies that will appeal to fans of the genre and beyond.

Fans of Stephen Lang will likely enjoy VFW, as his performance is central to this wild and disturbing thriller.

Lang is well-known for playing military characters, and his role as Quaritch in Avatar is probably his most famous. He’s also played notable roles like “The Blind Man” and Yeagor Draganov in the action sequel Sisu: Road to Revenge, set during World War II.

Lang is certainly known for playing tough characters, and especially those who are quite brutal. But his role as Fred Parras in VFW lets him tap into his skill for portraying weathered war veterans, but this time with a more honorable and sympathetic side, while still maintaining an intimidating presence.

What really struck me about VFW was how powerfully it portrayed the bond between these men. It wasn’t just the action, but the way Lang performed and connected with the other experienced actors – their chemistry was incredible. Despite all the violence, the film managed to be surprisingly heartwarming, showing how shared trauma can forge incredibly strong, lasting connections. You really felt like these guys had been through hell together and still cared deeply for each other.

Stephen Lang often plays villains or characters who fail, so it’s unusual to see him win. That’s why he deserves more roles where he gets to be the hero.

Lang is a remarkably convincing villain, and while many will remember him from films like Avatar and Don’t Breathe, VFW is a movie that should also be remembered as part of his impressive career.
