With so many shows being rebooted or revived these days, not every continuation is a good idea. While it’s fun to think about what could happen with a finished story, some revivals are more promising than others. That’s why the news that Hulu cancelled the planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival was so surprising – it seemed like a guaranteed success.
Many fans were understandably upset to learn the planned continuation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer won’t happen, but the cast and crew are also deeply disappointed. This includes Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who was going to star as the next slayer. According to Variety, Armstrong expressed her sadness on Instagram, thanking everyone involved and all the supportive fans.
I know many of you have likely heard, but I wanted to express my gratitude for all the support you’ve shown me and the show. These past few months have been truly special, and I’m really proud of what we accomplished. While I’m disappointed you won’t get to see more, it doesn’t diminish how amazing this experience was. I want to thank Sarah Michelle Gellar, the other actresses, and Chloé Zhao. I appreciate all of you. I also want to thank both longtime fans and everyone who embraced this new direction and believed in me. Thank you to the incredible cast I worked with – you’re all fantastic. Ultimately, we brought this back for you. ‘Buffy’ means so much to all of us, and it’s a story that will continue to live on, so who knows what the future holds.
Although every actor faces an unpredictable future, McKenna Armstrong appears to be in a good position to bounce back from this challenge and land new roles soon. Still a teenager, she’s already built up an impressive list of credits, including parts in films like It Chapter Two, Black Widow, and the recent Firestarter remake, as well as memorable appearances on TV shows such as Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and The Lowdown. Her next project, the drama Road to Recovery, directed by Scout Taylor-Compton, is currently being finished.

The planned revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, originally titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, seemed promising, but bringing back popular shows or continuing successful movies is often more challenging than expected. Disney, which owns Hulu, hasn’t always given these projects much time to succeed – the Lizzie McGuire reboot was canceled before anyone could see it, and the High Fidelity series starring Zoë Kravitz only lasted one season. It’s a bit ironic, then, that Hulu’s show Reboot, which was about a ’90s sitcom cast reuniting for a revival, was also canceled after just one season.
