I’ve been a huge fan of Michael B. Jordan for years, and I was absolutely thrilled to see him finally win an Oscar! He’s consistently delivered incredible performances, and it’s so well-deserved. What’s even more amazing is that he broke a 34-year streak – apparently, it’s been a long time since an actor from a horror film took home the award, and he just changed that!
Jordan received the Best Actor Oscar on March 15th for his performance as both Smoke and Stack in last year’s popular movie, Sinners. He was a strong contender for the award, as Sinners led all films with the most nominations. This win makes him only the second actor to ever win Best Actor for a role in a horror film, following Anthony Hopkins, who won in 1992 for his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
Predicting the Best Actor Winner Was Difficult
Despite being the favorite, Jordan’s victory wasn’t certain, as some people thought Timothée Chalamet would win for his performance in the highly praised film. Before the event, Chalamet had stirred up controversy by saying that ballet and opera weren’t popular anymore. This led to strong criticism from important people and fans online, and he was even playfully teased on Saturday Night Live the night before the Oscars. However, Oscar voting had already finished, so the negative reaction probably didn’t change the outcome.
Michael Jordan and Timothée Chalamet were among the nominees for Best Actor at the Oscars. Other contenders included Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in One Battle After Another, Ethan Hawke for Blue Moon, and Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent.
Sinners Made History at the Oscars
The movie Sinners made Oscar history with an impressive 16 nominations, surpassing the previous record of 14. That record was previously held by three films: All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016).
As a lifelong movie fan, I’ve always looked up to the Academy, the incredible actors, and the filmmakers who’ve inspired me. So, to be mentioned alongside them, to be part of those conversations – it’s a really amazing feeling, a true validation of my work. I told The Hollywood Reporter that it feels incredibly solidifying.
He expressed how deeply moving it was to see the film connect with audiences throughout the year. He said the nomination was a wonderful acknowledgment of everyone involved and the impact the movie had on people, and he was finding it hard to fully express his feelings.
Sinners is currently and HBO Max.
