A highly acclaimed war film is currently available to watch for free, but not for long! Action and war movie fans can often find great films on free streaming services, with titles like Saving Private Ryan, The Hurt Locker, The Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket, and Jarhead frequently appearing. Now, a true classic—released 40 years ago and still impactful—is getting its moment to shine, but the offer is temporary.
In 1986, a remarkable group of actors – including Willem Dafoe, Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Forest Whitaker, and Johnny Depp – came together under director Oliver Stone to create what many consider the definitive Vietnam War film. Now you can stream Platoon for free on Tubi and witness Willem Dafoe’s unforgettable and powerfully dramatic on-screen death.
Unfortunately, the movie Platoon won’t be available to stream for free on Tubi much longer. It’s listed as leaving the platform soon, meaning it will move to a different streaming service in the next few weeks. Tubi doesn’t share exact dates for when movies become unavailable, but we anticipate Platoon will no longer be free to stream by April 2026. If you want to watch it for free, now’s the time!
‘Platoon’ Is One of the Best Anti-War, War Movies
As a film buff, I’ve always found war movies a bit of a contradiction. They make money by showing all the explosions and action, turning something awful like war into a thrilling ride. But at the same time, most of them are actually against war. We saw it recently with Alex Garland’s Warfare getting a lot of heat for this, but honestly, this trend of anti-war messages within war movies goes way back – all the way to films like Platoon, and even before that, really.
Platoon tells the story of Chris Taylor (Martin Sheen), a young soldier in the Vietnam War. He’s torn between two conflicting sergeants, and struggles with the brutal realities of combat, which challenge his initial beliefs about the war. Beyond being a powerful and engaging film, Platoon offers a compelling look at the Vietnam War, examining it through both a political lens and the experiences of the soldiers who fought there.
‘Platoon’ Is the 234th Best Movie of All Time (That’s Very Specific)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
As a film buff, I’ve always loved Oliver Stone’s Platoon. It’s a classic Vietnam War movie and clearly a hit with audiences – it’s ‘Certified Fresh’ with an 89% rating, but people really seem to love it, giving it a 93% audience score! It’s held in very high esteem on IMDb too, currently sitting at number 324 on their all-time list with a rating of 8.1. For comparison, The Shawshank Redemption still reigns supreme at number one with an incredible 9.3, and Ingmar Bergman’s Autumn Sonata is doing well too, landing in the 250th spot.
