Prime Video’s Ad-Free Tier Gets ‘Ultra’ Upgrade

Prime Video’s ad-free premium tier is getting an upgrade… for a price.

Prime Video used to offer two subscription options. A basic plan was $8.99 per month on its own, or $14.99 if you already had an Amazon Prime membership. This plan included ads while you watched. If you wanted to remove the ads, you could upgrade to Prime Video Ad Free for an additional $2.99 each month.

Beginning April 10th, Amazon is changing its Prime Video subscription options. The ad-supported plan will remain the same price, but the ad-free tier is being renamed “Prime Video Ultra” and will cost $4.99 per month in addition to your regular subscription. This means watching ad-free will now cost $13.98 monthly with a standalone plan, or $19.98 per month if you have an Amazon Prime membership.

The updated ad-free plan includes some improvements over the previous one. With the new Prime Video Ultra tier, you can download 100 titles for offline viewing (previously 25) and watch on up to five devices at the same time (previously three). The standard ad-free plan now allows 50 downloads and four simultaneous streams.

Prime Video Ultra lets you watch shows and movies in 4K resolution, but this feature used to be available to all subscribers. Now, you’ll need to pay extra for Prime Video Ultra to access 4K. Additionally, you’ll require Prime Video Ultra to experience Dolby Atmos sound.

Prime Video’s prices are going up in just two days, right after the first two episodes of the highly anticipated Season 5 of The Boys are released. If you want to continue enjoying ad-free viewing of The Boys and everything else on Prime Video, you’ll need to budget for a slightly higher subscription cost.

I’ve definitely noticed it’s become tougher to enjoy Prime Video recently. It feels like they’re constantly adding things that make it less appealing. First, the ads started in January 2024, and then they really ramped up around July 2025. Now, with this price increase, it just feels like they’re squeezing us more and more. Amazon says it’s because providing ad-free streaming and extra features costs a lot, and they want to be in line with other services while letting us choose how we watch, but honestly, it’s frustrating as a viewer.

Even so, Prime Video Ultra is still more affordable than Netflix’s ad-free plan, which costs $25 a month. However, it’s hard to predict if prices will continue to increase.
