The show first launched as a short-run series in 2017 and proved popular enough to return for a second season in 2019. Now, after seven years, fans are getting exciting news about Season 3.

The first season of the show received widespread praise, and while the second season didn’t quite live up to expectations, it was still very popular on HBO Max. Discussions about a third season began in 2023 when Nicole Kidman announced it would happen. Now, the show’s creator, David E. Kelley, has hinted in a recent interview with USA Today that production could begin this fall.

Kelley confirmed that things are just beginning to develop, but the project is definitely moving forward. He expressed excitement, highlighting the strong cast and the potential for compelling stories. Filming is currently expected to begin in the fall.

Big Little Lies Season 3 Will Feature a Time Jump

Moriarty explained that she’s writing a follow-up story where the children from the original are now teenagers, making their mothers the parents of teens.

Kathryn Newton, who previously played the daughter of Reese Witherspoon’s character Madeline and James Tupper’s Nathan, has hinted at a possible return to the show, which would fit with the planned time jump. She said she’ll only fully believe it when she’s back on set, but is very enthusiastic about the possibility of working with Reese Witherspoon and the rest of the cast again, as the show had a significant impact on her life.

Liane Moriarty’s Underseen Adaptation Found Success on Streaming

After the huge popularity of Big Little Lies, Liane Moriarty became highly sought after in Hollywood. Nicole Kidman, who starred in and produced the successful HBO series, collaborated with Moriarty again for Nine Perfect Strangers, which was originally intended as a limited series based on her book. The story was then developed into a Hulu series, set to premiere in 2025.

Beyond her well-known book series, the Australian author has seen several of her works adapted for the screen. Recently, one of these adaptations became a popular streaming show, released in Australia in March 2025 with Teresa Palmer, Miranda Richardson, and Danielle Macdonald. It was produced by Nicole Kidman. Her 2021 novel was also adapted into a limited series, which premiered on Peacock in 2024.

Big Little Lies Season 3 doesn’t have a release date, but it will premiere on HBO Max.
