The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the Perfect Weekend Binge

I’ve been really impressed with the fantasy shows Prime Video has been making lately! They’ve done both live-action stuff like The Wheel of Time and animated series like The Legend of Vox Machina. But honestly, The Rings of Power is the one that really stands out. When it came out in September 2022, it was a huge deal – it broke all sorts of records! It was the most expensive TV series ever created, and more people tuned in for the first episode than any other show in Prime Video history.

Even though it received a lot of criticism, The Rings of Power is coming back for a third season, and they’ve already finished filming enough for two more. Many people dismissed the show because it differed from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original The Lord of the Rings books and didn’t look quite like Peter Jackson’s movies. But if you’re a fan of Middle-earth, it’s worth checking out – especially now, while there aren’t many other fantasy shows available. Now is a great time to watch the whole series on Prime Video.

The Rings of Power Diverged From The Lord of the Rings’ Narrative

Ever since The Rings of Power was announced, it’s been a source of debate for many reasons. A major concern for fans was that the show significantly altered established lore – things like compressing the timeline and changing how certain characters relate to each other. While some of these changes were intentional artistic decisions, others were beyond the creators’ control.

The TV series The Rings of Power takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, a period that began after the defeat of the evil Morgoth and concluded with the War of the Last Alliance. Unfortunately, much of Tolkien’s detailed writing about this era appears in The Silmarillion, a book Amazon wasn’t authorized to use when creating the show.

The show’s creators were limited to using material from The Lord of the Rings and a small number of details they agreed upon with the Tolkien family. This meant they had to create new storylines to connect everything. While some longtime fans might not appreciate these additions, the series still offers plenty for book lovers to enjoy.

Viewers who are only familiar with the movies will likely find less to criticize. Unlike other recent Lord of the Rings projects, such as The War of the Rohirrim or the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum, this series doesn’t continue the story from Peter Jackson’s films. However, it generally feels consistent with the movies and uses similar visual styles.

Now is the Perfect Time to Binge The Rings of Power

The way The Rings of Power is structured makes it perfect for watching all at once. The story follows multiple groups of people – including the Númenóreans, Southlanders, Harfoots, and Orcs – and their journeys intertwine throughout the series.

Because the show has many different storylines, some characters don’t appear in every episode. If you don’t watch it all at once, it can take a while to see them again. Releasing the episodes closer together helps everything feel more connected. With 16 episodes that are each about an hour long, The Rings of Power is a great length for a weekend binge.

As a huge fan, I’m already excited for Season 3 of The Rings of Power, but I’m also a little daunted! If it’s as long as the previous seasons, we’re looking at around 24 hours of content total. That’s a serious commitment – I don’t think I can binge it in just one or two nights! But honestly, Season 3 feels crucial. It’s supposed to finally show us the big events we’ve been waiting for, like the war between the Elves and Sauron, and I can’t wait to see how they bring it all to life.

The next episodes are crucial for the show’s success. With The Wheel of Time recently canceled after three seasons, The Rings of Power needs to perform well to avoid the same fate. It now also faces new competition from The Hunt for Gollum, which is coming out in 2027. The Rings of Power can’t rely on being the only fantasy series of its kind anymore.

Look, this competition brewing between different Tolkien adaptations could actually be a good thing for us, the viewers. It’ll push both shows to really up their game and deliver the best possible product. If you’re following The Rings of Power, I’d recommend revisiting the first two seasons before the marketing for season three really kicks into gear – you’ll appreciate the new episodes even more!
