Netflix recently released a limited series based on the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it focuses less on the horror and more on the mystery. The show quickly became popular worldwide.
The idea of a group of people bound by a dangerous secret isn’t original, but it consistently works well in storytelling. Netflix’s recent series, That Night, which premiered on March 13th, is a perfect example. The show quickly gained popularity, landing in the global top four on FlixPatrol within just one day.
I’m so excited to see how well this Spanish crime drama is doing! It actually hit number one in a bunch of South American countries like Argentina, Venezuela, and Ecuador. Plus, it was the top show in the Dominican Republic, Slovakia, Spain, and even Ukraine! Here in the U.S., it started off at number seven, which is still pretty great, and I’m hoping it climbs the charts soon.
That Night Is Perfect for Pretty Little Lies Fans
The show centers around a straightforward idea: a person dies accidentally, and others must work together to cover it up. This season, the story focuses on a family vacation gone wrong, as seen in That Night, which takes place in the Dominican Republic.
I was completely hooked from the start! This young mom, Elena, had a terrible accident – she accidentally hit someone with her car. She was so scared and immediately called her sisters, Paula and Cris, for help. But things got way more complicated when they realized the man she hit was a police officer. Now, they’re trying to figure out how to handle everything and keep Elena out of prison. It’s not just about the accident, though; the story really explores why they’re all acting the way they are, and it takes you back to their childhood to understand how they became who they are.
Created by Jason George, known for Into the Night, the six-part series That Night explores the lengths a family will go to for each other. The story is told from the perspectives of the Arbizu sisters – Paula Usero, Claudia Salas, and Clara Galle – with the viewpoint shifting between them.
The film That Night is inspired by Gillian McAllister’s popular 2021 novel of the same title. However, the movie isn’t a direct adaptation – the filmmakers made some changes, including setting the family vacation in the Dominican Republic instead of Italy.
That Night Received Mixed Reviews
The new limited series started with a lukewarm reception from critics, earning a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This score, based on just five reviews, means it barely qualifies as ‘fresh,’ with only three critics giving it a positive review.
In a review for Collider, Jasneet Singh praised the show, noting that while it starts as a tense thriller about an accidental killing, it ultimately becomes a deeply moving family drama. He highlighted its beautiful and often heartbreaking exploration of how far people will go for family.
Karina Adelgaard from Heaven of Horror also enjoyed That Night, specifically praising the incredibly talented cast. She also confirmed that viewers will get resolution in the sixth and final episode, describing the ending as both powerful and realistically challenging.
Critics had mixed reactions. Chris Joyce from Movies and Munchies felt the film, while containing good ideas, lacked a strong, memorable story. Pramit Chatterjee of Digital Mafia Talkies described it as tonally inconsistent, comparing it to a poorly adapted book and noting its use of a non-linear, multi-perspective approach—similar to the ‘Rashomon effect’—to tell the story.
That Night is streaming on Netflix.
