Well, folks, it’s official: 2025 has just snagged what I consider Hollywood’s worst honor – the Golden Raspberry, or Razzie, for worst film of the year. And believe it or not, this isn’t the first time this particular film has earned such a distinction. It’s a repeat offender, unfortunately.
The film War of the Worlds received the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture on March 14th at the 46th annual Razzies. It beat out Snow White, Hurry Up Tomorrow, and The Electric State for the prize, but critics seemed to dislike the 2025 sci-fi film the most.
The film received five out of six Razzie awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director (Rich Lee), Worst Actor (Ice Cube), Worst Remake/Rip-off/Sequel, and Worst Screenplay. While it dominated the ceremony, Disney’s live-action remake only took home a single award: Worst Screen Combo for the artificial dwarfs.
What Happens in War of the Worlds?
I was completely hooked by this movie! It’s directed by Rich Lee, and the story, written by Kenneth A. Golde and Marc Hyman, puts you right in the shoes of Radford, a Homeland Security officer. He has access to surveillance everywhere, and we, the audience, experience an alien invasion with him – watching it unfold on all these screens and systems. It’s a really immersive way to tell the story.
Despite being based on H.G. Wells’ classic 1897 novel – a story adapted for film many times, even by Steven Spielberg – this movie turned out to be the least successful adaptation of them all.
Starring alongside Ice Cube, War of the Worlds features Eva Longoria as Doctor Sandra Salas, Clark Gregg as DHS Director Donald Briggs, Devon Bostick as Mark Goodman, and Iman Benson and Henry Hunter Hall as Will’s children, Faith and David. Despite its impressive cast, the film received very poor reviews when it came out, currently holding a 4% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie War of the Worlds wasn’t a hit with audiences, receiving a 20% rating from users on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 2,500 reviews. Despite this, it remained popular and continued to be widely watched for over a month after it came out.
Why 2025 Was Still a Good Year for Ice Cube Even After War of the Worlds
Although the movie War of the Worlds didn’t perform well for Ice Cube, 2025 was generally a good year for him. Before the film came out in July, he had a cameo role as himself on the show The Studio. Ice Cube was one of many popular celebrities who appeared on The Studio, which is already proving successful and is gearing up for a second season.
In December, Ice Cube made another cameo appearance as himself in the film Anaconda, a new take on the 1997 movie. The film stars Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Thandiwe Newton, and Steve Zahn as friends who travel to the Amazon rainforest to try and remake the original creature feature.
Despite initial expectations, Anaconda received much more positive reviews than War of the Worlds. Even better, the movie was a financial success, earning over $134 million on a $45 million budget. This marked a significant achievement for Ice Cube as one of his final major film roles in 2025.
War of the Worlds is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
