The Boys Spinoffs: Amazon’s Balanced Approach vs. Marvel’s Oversaturation

As a big movie and TV fan, I’ve noticed the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been feeling a little… much lately, like they’re just throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. But Prime Video seems to have figured things out with The Boys. It’s funny, because The Boys originally made fun of all those endless Marvel spinoffs, pointing out how ridiculous it was getting. And now? Well, now The Boys is becoming exactly what it used to satirize – a huge franchise with a bunch of spinoffs of its own. It’s a bit ironic, honestly!

What sets Amazon apart is its careful approach to The Boys. Unlike some streaming services that heavily promote a single show, Amazon hasn’t overwhelmed viewers with Boys content—at least not yet. While more spin-offs are planned, Amazon has so far managed to strike a good balance with the franchise.

The Boys Has A Lot Of Spinoffs, But Not Too Many

Amazon is developing several spin-offs of its popular show The Boys, but it’s still far from overwhelming audiences like Marvel is with its content. Many of the shows on Disney+ connected to the Marvel universe feel like required viewing. Having to watch shows like Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, WandaVision, and Secret Invasion just to follow The Marvels can feel exhausting and like you’re being forced to keep up, which isn’t a great way to enjoy entertainment.

Watching The Boys doesn’t feel like a chore – it strikes the perfect balance. Diabolical was a separate, self-contained spin-off – an animated series of individual stories set in the same world. It’s a really clever and unique superhero cartoon if you choose to watch it, but you won’t miss anything important in The Boys if you skip it.

Both The Boys and Gen V are connected, creating a larger story, but they also work great as separate shows with their own characters and storylines. You don’t need to watch both to enjoy either one, so neither feels like a chore. And because they release new seasons on alternating years, you only have to keep up with one show at a time.

Amazon plans to expand The Boys universe with a prequel focusing on Soldier Boy, titled Vought Rising, and a new Boys series set in Mexico. However, since the main Boys show is concluding this year, fans aren’t yet overwhelmed with content from the franchise.

Marvel Is Already Pulling Back

Honestly, I’m noticing a real shift at Marvel. It feels like just recently we were absolutely drowning in content – another movie I’d quickly forget every couple of months, and a new Disney+ series popping up every few weeks. They were releasing a lot – four films in 2021, three in both 2022 and 2023, and they’re currently slated for three in 2025 – but a lot of it just wasn’t hitting the mark, and box office numbers reflected that. It seems like Marvel is finally starting to scale things back, which, frankly, might be a good thing.

Marvel only released one movie in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine, and it generated a lot of excitement. This was likely because fans really connect with those characters, and enough time had passed since the previous Marvel film to build anticipation. It appears Marvel took the right approach with this successful release.

As a huge Marvel fan, it’s a bit of a quieter year for them, but still exciting! They’re only releasing two movies: a new Spider-Man flick this summer and a new Avengers movie around the holidays. Honestly, those are their two biggest draws right now – the ones almost guaranteed to make a ton of money. And thankfully, they’re spaced out enough that we’ll have plenty of time to get hyped for each one!

As a big fan of superhero content, I’ve always admired how The Boys team focuses on making really good stuff, even if it means making less of it. And honestly, Marvel Studios could learn something from that. One weak film, like Captain America: Brave New World, can undo a lot more good than a fantastic one, like Thunderbolts, can ever achieve. It’s just a simple truth about building and maintaining an audience – quality really does matter more than just churning out content.
