KPop Demon Hunters has become a major cultural hit, like many Korean dramas. This animated musical film, one of Netflix’s most popular releases, tells the story of singers who secretly fight against ancient evils. It successfully combines humor, fantasy, and emotional storytelling, all set to a soundtrack of critically acclaimed original songs.
The unique character designs of Rumi, Zoey, and Mira, combined with the meaningful inclusion of creator Maggie Kang’s Korean background, helped make KPop Demon Hunters a huge hit. While fans eagerly await a sequel, these 12 K-dramas offer a great alternative to enjoy in the meantime.
The King: Eternal Monarch
An Emperor Discovers His Evil Uncle’s Portal To A Parallel World
Like the series KPop Demon Hunters, The King: Eternal Monarch features a fantastical alternate history with a magical element. This 2020 K-drama romance follows Lee Gon (played by Lee Min-ho), the king of Corea, as he discovers a hidden portal to another world. The portal was created by his resentful uncle, Lee Lim (Lee Jung-jin), and poses a serious threat.
Beyond a truly menacing villain, The King: Eternal Monarch delivers exciting action and intricate political maneuvering. Lee Lim’s relentless ambition threatens two worlds, and only Lee Gon can stop him – but he needs to fix a legendary flute, the Manpasikjeok, first.
Business Proposal
A Modern Classic Starring A KPop Demon Hunters Voice Actor
While Business Proposal and KPop Demon Hunters are very different shows, fans won’t want to miss Business Proposal because of Ahn Hyo-seop. He voices the leader of a K-pop group in KPop Demon Hunters, but then completely transforms to play the character Kang Tae-moo in the hit Netflix series Business Proposal, showcasing his impressive acting skills.
The K-drama Business Proposal tells the charming story of Kang Tae-moo, who finds himself tangled in lies when he asks Shin Ha-ri (Kim Se-jeong), one of his employees, to pretend to be his girlfriend. Though their romance starts with a deception, Tae-moo and Ha-ri’s delightful connection makes this series a standout in the fake dating genre.
Mystic Pop-up Bar
An Endearing Spitfire Employs A Magical Human To Break Her Centuries-Long Curse
As she lay dying, Weol-ju (Hwang Jung-eum) absorbed the energy from a magical tree, which angered the god of the underworld. He cursed her, stating she must help 100,000 people find happiness before she could be released. Five hundred years later, Weol-ju encounters Han Kang-bae (Yook Sung-jae), a man with the strange ability to uncover the truth simply by touching someone.
The K-drama series is incredibly easy to get hooked on. It centers around Weol-ju, who hires Kang-bae to help out at her temporary pop-up bar. Together, they try to break a curse by assisting each customer who walks through the door. While the show occasionally leans into dramatic territory, it’s still a fun and engaging series that you could easily finish in a weekend.
The Heavenly Idol
A Supernatural Warrior Swaps Bodies With A K-Pop Idol
While The Heavenly Idol and KPop Demon Hunters have similar foundations, they tell very different stories. This K-pop drama centers around Rembrary (Kim Min-kyu), a high priest who unexpectedly finds himself inhabiting the body of Woo Yeon-woo, a K-pop idol who is struggling to succeed.
Rembrary, a legendary warrior, needs to overcome the challenges of the K-pop world to return home and defeat the villain Mawang (Lee Jang-woo). He relies on Kim Dal (Go Bo-gyeol), the manager of the boy band Wild Animal, as he adjusts to modern life. While occasionally lighthearted and goofy, The Heavenly Idol is thoroughly enjoyable.
Hotel del Luna
An Unassuming Human Becomes The Manager Of A Purgatorial Hotel
The K-drama Hotel del Luna is another excellent choice, featuring K-pop star IU. This moving fantasy series tells the story of Jang Man-wol, who is forced to manage the Hotel del Luna as punishment for her past mistakes. After a thousand years of unchanging routine, things get shaken up when Gu Chan-sung, played by Yeo Jin-goo, arrives as the hotel’s new human manager.
| Hotel del Luna Cast | |
|---|---|
| Actor | Character |
| IU | Jang Man-wol, hotel owner |
| Yeo Jin-goo | Gu Chan-sung, hotel manager |
| Jung Dong-hwan | Noh Joon-suk, former hotel manager |
| Pyo Ji-hoon | Ji Hyun-joong, hotel receptionist |
| Bae Hae-sun | Choi Seo-hee, hotel housekeeper |
| Shin Jung-geun | Kim Seon-bi, hotel bartender |
After Chan-sung starts his job, the hotel changes from a sad, lonely place to a hopeful stepping stone for spirits moving on. During his time there, he gradually learns the secrets of Hotel del Luna, including the heartbreaking story of how Man-wol became its owner.
My Demon
After Accidentally Stealing His Powers, A Woman Enters A Fake Marriage With A Demon
If you enjoyed the romance between Rumi and Jinu in KPop Demon Hunters, you’ll likely love My Demon. This K-drama follows Do Do-hee, a young company CEO, who accidentally becomes connected to a demon named Jeong Gu-won after gaining his abilities. It stars Kim You-jung and Song Kang.
Do-hee and Gu-won pretend to be married to protect her from a dangerous plot and to stop him from vanishing. Though they start out disliking each other, their fake relationship unexpectedly blossoms into real love – a love that might overcome any obstacle, no matter how impossible.
Guardian: The Lonely and Great God
An Immortal Goblin Seeks His One True Love To End His Suffering
Okay, let me tell you about Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, or Goblin as most people call it. This K-drama is a real standout in the romance genre – it seriously left its mark. The story centers around Kim Shin, played by Gong Yoo, a soldier from the Goryeo era who tragically dies in battle and is reborn as an immortal, a Dokkaebi. It’s a fascinating premise and a beautiful show.
Kim Shin, an immortal being, is searching for his soulmate to finally end his lonely existence and the pain of watching everyone he cares about die. He finds her in Ji Eun-tak, a cheerful and optimistic woman who is his complete opposite. As they fall in love, Kim Shin has to fight off enemies from his past and keep Ji Eun-tak safe.
Lovely Runner
A Super-Fan Travels Back In Time To Save Her Favorite K-Pop Idol’s Life
Compared to other shows, Lovely Runner feels more realistic, though it still asks viewers to accept some fantastical elements. This popular 2024 K-drama combines romance and comedy with a murder mystery, all connected by a time-travel plot. The story follows Im Sol (Kim Hye-yoon) as she repeatedly goes back to 2008, trying to save Ryu Sun-jae (Byeon Woo-seok).
The K-drama starts with Im Sol seeing Sun-jae as just a famous K-pop singer she admires. But as she remembers her youth, she realizes they were neighbors, and even more surprisingly, he was her first love. This makes solving his fifteen-year-old murder even more complicated.
Alchemy of Souls
A Body-Swapping Rogue And A Sheltered Nobleman Explore Forbidden Elemental Magic
In the enchanting kingdom of Daeho, a powerful warrior named Nak-su finds her spirit trapped inside the body of a weak servant, Mu-deok (played by Jung So-min), due to a dangerous magical practice – the ‘Alchemy of Souls’. She then meets Jang Uk (Lee Jae-wook), a nobleman, and they make an agreement: he’ll protect her if she teaches him how to fight.
An unexpected connection forms between Jang Uk and Nak-su, with Jang Uk becoming her dedicated student. However, the drama takes a darker turn when Jin Mu reveals his ruthless ambition, showing he’ll do anything to gain power – even betray Jang Uk and exploit his feelings for Nak-su.
The Uncanny Counter
Demon Hunters Pose As Noodle Shop Workers While Vanquishing Evil
I was immediately reminded of KPop Demon Hunters when I started watching The Uncanny Counter. It turns out the main characters are actually demon hunters – they are the Counters! They live pretty normal lives, working together at a noodle shop, but at night, they team up to fight evil spirits who are trying to become immortal. It’s a really cool concept!
As a huge fan of supernatural thrillers, I was hooked by the latest season! It really kicks into high gear when this new kid, So Mun, suddenly appears and joins the existing team of demon hunters. They’re already working hard using their incredible abilities to keep the balance between the living world and whatever lies beyond, but little do they know, a massive threat is heading their way. It’s a classic good versus evil story, but with a really fresh energy thanks to this new character.
