Zack Snyder’s 300: Rise of an Empire Rises on Netflix Charts

A long-lost sequel is now gaining popularity on Netflix around the world, twelve years after it first appeared in cinemas.

According to FlixPatrol, 300: Rise of an Empire is currently a Top 10 movie on Netflix in many countries. However, it’s not available to stream in the United States right now. Despite this, its popularity on Netflix worldwide is a positive sign for director Zack Snyder, as the film didn’t perform as well as hoped when it was originally released in 2014.

300: Rise of an Empire Did Not Match 300’s Success

Despite mixed reviews and an approval rating of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel to 300, titled 300: Rise of an Empire, was financially successful. It earned over $337 million with a budget of $110 million. However, its earnings didn’t reach the level of the original 2006 film, which made over $468 million worldwide.

Zack Snyder co-wrote the script for the sequel with Kurt Johnstad. The new film featured returning cast members from the first movie, such as Lena Headey, Peter Mensah, David Wenham, Andrew Tiernan, Andrew Pleavin, and Rodrigo Santoro. Joining them in 300: Rise of an Empire were new actors including Eva Green, Sullivan Stapleton, Hans Matheson, and Callan Mulvey.

Okay, so 300: Rise of an Empire isn’t a direct follow-up to the first film. It actually jumps around the timeline, showing us events that happened before, during, and after the original story. This time around, we’re with Themistocles, played by Sullivan Stapleton, a Greek general leading the navy against the massive Persian fleet. The movie really centers on the Battle of Salamis, and it’s interesting because the Greeks don’t just try to overpower the Persians – they use smart tactics and strategy, which keeps the tone consistent with what we loved about the first 300.

Zack Snyder Has a Third Franchise Film in Mind

As a big fan of 300, I was really excited when Zack Snyder talked about wanting to make a third movie! He actually wrote a script – it was going to be about Alexander the Great and called Blood and Ashes, and he imagined it as a continuation of the story we already know and love. He tried to get Warner Bros. to make it happen, but it didn’t work out. Eventually, the rights to the project lapsed at the end of 2023. He’s still hoping to find a way to get Blood and Ashes made someday, and honestly, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he does!

Snyder explained to The Hollywood Reporter that they regained the rights to the project, allowing them to move forward with it if they choose. He questioned whether there was an audience for a film that was intensely focused on male intimacy, extremely violent, and highly sexual, but suggested that those very elements might actually make it a success.

In 2024, there was a report about this, but we haven’t heard much more about the project since then.
