Disney’s $1.8B Sequel Zootopia 2 Is Officially the No. 1 Title in the World

In 2025, 2 became the biggest surprise hit. Now, it’s taking over streaming platforms.

Released on March 11th, the new animated film quickly became popular on Disney+. As a sequel to the 2016 hit Zootopia, it’s actually earned more at the box office than the first movie. According to FlixPatrol, Zootopia 2 is now the most-watched film worldwide on Disney+, and the Zootopia series is doing very well overall.

On March 12th, Zootopia 2 began appearing in movie charts across several countries, quickly reaching the top spot in 21 of them. The next day, it premiered at number one in the United States, bringing its total number of chart-topping positions worldwide to 72.

The Disney+ short series Zootopia+ jumped to number 3 on the charts, moving up three spots. Meanwhile, the original Zootopia movie from 2016 fell to fourth place.

Disney Is Now Moving to Zootopia

I was so excited to see Disney+ and Disney Animation celebrate the release of Zootopia by reimagining some of their other shows as if they existed in that world! They created these hilarious character concepts – like a Zootopiastyle take on Daredevil called Beardevil: Awake Again, and even a parody of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives called The Secret Lives of Mammal Wives. It was a fun nod to Ginnifer Goodwin’s past, too, with a Zootopiathemed version of Once Upon a Time called Bounce Upon a Time – she starred in that show as Snow White! They also did a bunch of other clever transformations like Ssssinderella, Purradise, and a Predator spin-off called Predator: Grasslands. It was a really creative way to promote the movie.

In Zootopia 2, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are now official police partners, but a new case quickly throws them into trouble. They’re framed for a crime while chasing a pit viper named Gary De’Snake, and must work together to clear their names. The investigation takes them to unfamiliar areas of Zootopia, pushing their partnership to its limits.

It’s no surprise Disney is heavily promoting the new animated sequel – the franchise has been incredibly successful. The previous films earned a massive $1.86 billion worldwide, even beating Avatar: The Way of Water, all while costing only $150 million to make.

The movie was a hit with both critics and viewers, earning a 91% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics and a 95% audience score. It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Film.

Zootopia 2 Is Filled With Easter Eggs for Movie Lovers

The new movie is packed with callbacks to the 2016 film and is a real treat for movie lovers. It’s also full of nods to other classic Disney animated movies.

As a huge fan of animation, I absolutely loved the little details in Zootopia 2! There’s this amazing scene in a kitchen with a lion and a tiny rat pulling its mane – it’s a clear nod to Ratatouille, and a raccoon chef even yells, ‘I knew it!’ Apparently, that’s not the only connection. The filmmakers hinted that they also used music from Ratatouille, which makes sense since Michael Giacchino, the composer from Ratatouille, also worked on Zootopia 2. It’s those kinds of Easter eggs that really make a movie special, don’t you think?

The new animated movie includes several nods to live-action films, referencing classics like The Shining and The Silence of the Lambs. There’s even a playful take on Mulholland Drive—called Moleholland Tunnel—and a hidden Alien reference: a character named Platypus appears during a movie scene Nick is watching in Zootopia 2.
