If you’re looking for movies to watch this weekend, Prime Video has you covered, especially with the Academy Awards happening this Sunday, March 15th. Last week, I highlighted a few recommendations, including Sherlock Holmes, the classic Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox, and Shadow Force.
Those three films covered a lot of ground in terms of genre, offering Prime Video viewers plenty to choose from over the weekend. I’m hoping to do the same with my recommendations this weekend, but I’m skipping Prime Video originals this time. Instead, I’ve picked a beloved animated classic and two films that are perfect to watch alongside the Oscars.
3. Shrek (2001)
Okay, let’s talk Shrek. Honestly, when I think of animated franchises that really nailed it, Shrek is always one of the first that comes to mind. The first movie is just a blast – tons of action, genuinely funny, and it does such a great job of setting up that amazing world and introducing all those characters we instantly fell in love with. Seriously, it’s the ideal choice for a cozy family movie night – everyone will enjoy it!
As a huge animation fan, I think revisiting Shrek right now is perfect timing! It’s exciting because a new Shrek movie – Shrek 5 – is coming out on June 30, 2027, and they’ve cast Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter. It feels like the ideal moment to rewatch the whole series, starting with the original that started it all.
2. Aftersun (2022)
As awards season heats up, Paul Mescal is a standout performer, particularly in the Oscar-nominated film Hamnet, where he plays William Shakespeare. To fully appreciate his talent – and potentially see him win an award – don’t miss Aftersun, where he’s been nominated for Best Actor.
Aftersun isn’t a film packed with action or a quick plot. It’s a thoughtful and moving story that delicately examines the bond between a father and daughter on vacation. Paul Mescal gives a deeply affecting performance as a dad struggling with his own issues while trying to appear strong for his child.
1. Sinners (2025)
This Sunday, alongside the Oscars, everyone’s talking about Sinners, the movie with the most Oscar nominations ever. It’s a brilliant supernatural horror film directed by Ryan Coogler, and features a compelling performance from Michael B. Jordan, who plays the twins Smoke and Stack.
As a film buff, I’ve been hearing a lot about Sinners, and it’s easy to see why! It absolutely crushed it at the box office, bringing in $369.3 million worldwide. But it’s not just a commercial success – critics are loving it too, giving it a whopping 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes. And with such a talented cast – Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, and others – it’s no surprise! Right now, it’s sitting at #7 on Prime Video in the US, so if you’re looking for something to watch this weekend, I highly recommend checking it out.
