As a longtime viewer, I have to admit it’s hitting me hard that Tommy Shelby’s story is likely coming to an end. Seeing Cillian Murphy, who absolutely owns that role and just won an Oscar, bring this character to a close with Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man feels…well, bittersweet. It’s been about thirteen years since we first met Tommy, and it’s hard to believe it’s potentially wrapping up. This feels like a real final chapter for an incredibly iconic character.
Cillian Murphy has brilliantly embodied the character of Tommy Shelby for six seasons and now a feature film. When the final installment, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, premieres on Netflix on March 20th, it will mark the end of an era for one of television’s most compelling characters, brought to life by a truly exceptional actor.
Not that it’ll be the end of the Shelby family entirely, mind you, but more on that in a moment.
Cillian Murphy Doesn’t Have Closure Yet on Peaky Blinders
He admitted he hadn’t fully come to terms with the experience yet. “I think I’ll really reflect on everything once the film is released and the fans have had a chance to see it,” he said. He explained that being involved in post-production and then immediately moving into promotion hadn’t allowed him time to process things. “It doesn’t feel finished yet,” he added. “I think when the fans really connect with it and make it their own, that’s when I’ll finally have a moment to think about everything.”
Sure, Cillian, we know what you mean — especially given .
Tommy Shelby to Appear In Peaky Blinders Sequel?
It seems likely that the new Peaky Blinders story will continue the strong legacy of the Shelby family. Plus, there’s a possibility that Tommy Murphy’s story isn’t finished, and could remain unresolved for a while longer.
The Shelby family saga isn’t over – it’s actually just beginning! With a significant role being recast, Netflix recently announced that production on the Peaky Blinders sequel (currently without a title) officially started in early March in Stoke-on-Trent, England.
The upcoming series continues the story from where ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’ ended, focusing on a fight for control in 1950s Birmingham following the devastation of the post-World War II bombings. Netflix has committed to two seasons, and there’s a possibility that Cillian Murphy could reprise his role as Tommy Shelby, even if his character is no longer alive, potentially avoiding a definitive ending for him.
