It feels like it’s been a while since we’ve had a really great Star Wars show, but things are looking up! After some uneven stories and changes, Lucasfilm is bringing us back to what works best for the franchise: animation. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord arrives on Disney+ in April, and it promises to deliver the Star Wars experience fans have been waiting for.
In 2025, there was significantly less new Star Wars content. After the release of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew early in the year, new television shows were limited to short-form, non-official stories and cartoons aimed at very young children.
Star Wars is experiencing a resurgence, and animated series are leading the way. Before Disney acquired Lucasfilm, animation helped improve how fans viewed the prequel trilogy. Star Wars Rebels paved the way for Disney’s Star Wars era, and now Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is continuing that tradition, launching a new chapter for the franchise.
Dave Filoni, known for his work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and as a co-creator of Star Wars Rebels, developed Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. While approved before his recent promotion, this series will give fans a preview of his new role, debuting just weeks before his first project in that capacity.
What is Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord About?
The comic series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord picks up Maul’s story right after Star Wars: The Clone Wars, following his escape from Ahsoka Tano. It shows how he manages to survive the Jedi Purge and ultimately rises to power as the leader of the Crimson Dawn crime syndicate, which is also featured in the film Solo: A Star Wars Story.
In addition to Darth Maul, the comic Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord introduces Marrok, an Inquisitor, and Devon Isara, a young Twi’lek who becomes Maul’s new apprentice. Devon, a former Jedi who survived the Purge, has drawn comparisons to a character originally planned by George Lucas to be Maul’s apprentice in the sequel trilogy. This character also appeared in some Star Wars video games and eventually became a villain in the Star Wars: Legacy comic, which was part of the now-discontinued Expanded Universe (now known as Legends).
When is the Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord Release Date
Sam Witwer, known for voicing Darth Maul in the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels (and making a brief appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story), will once again provide the voice for the character in Maul: Shadow Lord. The voice cast also features Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Wagner Moura as detective Brander Lawson, and Richard Ayoade as Two-Boots, Lawson’s droid companion.
Lucasfilm Animation is creating the series, using a similar animation style to Star Wars: The Clone Wars but with fresh updates to reflect its unique setting. Matt Michnovetz leads the writing team, and Brad Rau is the supervising director. Dave Filoni, Michnovetz, Rau, and Athena Yvette Portillo all serve as executive producers.
The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, premieres on Disney+ on April 6th. A comic book series from Marvel Comics, serving as a prequel to the show, started releasing in March.
