After a long wait, Season 2 of Netflix’s One Piece is finally here and proving to be a huge success, especially with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This new season clearly sets up a major challenge for Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hats, as they prepare to confront the formidable Baroque Works organization and its enigmatic leader, Mr. 0.
It’s likely Luffy and his crew will gain new abilities soon. While Season 3 hasn’t shown that yet, Season 2 of One Piece hinted at Luffy’s most significant power increase so far, though it’s uncertain if this will appear in the live-action series.
One Piece Season 2 Sneaks in Multiple Nika References
Although the live-action version of One Piece hasn’t reached the storylines featuring Gear Second or Third yet, Season 2 includes several hints about Gear 5 and the Sun God Nika. Episode 4 of Season 2 is especially noteworthy, as it brings the Straw Hat crew to Little Garden and introduces the Giants of Elbaph, setting the stage for Nika’s eventual appearance.
Even though Nika wasn’t originally part of the story, it makes sense the live-action series included her, especially since it established that the Elbaf legend originates with her. For example, in Episode 4, Dorry and Brogy talk about Nika right before their fight.
Earlier in the episode, there’s a subtle nod to Nika that many viewers might have overlooked: a small, carved wooden figure of Nika resting on Dorry’s chest, likely crafted by the Blue Ogre. The statue, with its curly hair, bushy eyebrows, and broad smile, strongly resembles Luffy’s Gear 5 form and clearly represents the Sun God Nika.
This isn’t the only time Season 2 hints at Nika and Gear 5, either. Even in Episode 2, Luffy strikes the Nika pose while singing to Laboon. This moment feels deliberate, as Luffy truly acts like the Sun God, bringing happiness to Laboon, who has been waiting for his friends to come back for fifty years.
Gear 5 Will Likely Never Make It Into the Live Action

While the references to Sun God Nika and Gear 5 are enjoyable, it’s unlikely the live-action series will ever reach the Wano Arc and show Gear 5. Even though the show is planned to continue for several seasons, Marineford seems like the furthest point it will realistically get.
Honestly, even before we got into the details, a story arc as huge and wild as Wano always felt like it needed incredible animation. But Gear 5? That was made for it! Taking cues from classic Western cartoons and embracing that over-the-top ‘toon force’ style, it just begged to be brought to life with dynamic visuals – it was a perfect fit!
No amount of special effects could truly capture the energy of Gear 5 in a live-action adaptation. However, the show includes fun nods and references that create a more connected and current version of the One Piece story, and it’s already proving popular with viewers.
