I was completely hooked by Sharp Objects! Even though it’s just eight episodes, it’s a perfect, tightly-woven psychological thriller – honestly, there isn’t a single weak one. It really reminded me of how Gillian Flynn first blew everyone away with Gone Girl. That book was a huge hit, and then David Fincher turned it into an amazing movie, and Sharp Objects feels like that same level of quality and suspense.
Readers who enjoy psychological thrillers probably already knew Gillian Flynn from her previous novels, Dark Places (2009) and her first book, Sharp Objects (2006). When Sharp Objects was first published, it received high praise, even from Stephen King, who called it both disturbing and impossible to put down.
Sharp Objects Is A Rare Perfect 10/10 Psychological Thriller Series
It’s easy to understand why Stephen King was a fan of Sharp Objects; its ending is famously shocking for a psychological thriller. But that made turning the suspenseful, tightly-wound story into a movie or show even more challenging. While Gone Girl was a massive success, the film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places in 2009 didn’t do well with critics or audiences.
HBO’s 2018 series, Sharp Objects, wasn’t just a good adaptation of the novel—it truly captured the book’s unsettling and intense atmosphere. The show is a unique murder mystery, blending the darkness of Southern Gothic with a disturbing family story and elements of a slasher film.
Amy Adams plays Camille Preaker, a journalist with a difficult past, who goes back to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, to report on a string of brutal murders. But returning home is complicated for Camille, who battles alcoholism and self-destructive tendencies, because she has to live with her unsettling teenage half-sister, Amma, and their overbearing mother, Adora.
Saying much more would spoil the many surprises in Sharp Objects, but it’s safe to say this is a truly exceptional psychological thriller that consistently keeps you guessing. The final twist is particularly shocking – one of the most powerful reveals in the genre, and something viewers won’t soon forget.
Sharp Objects Makes HBO’s Next Gillian Flynn Show More Exciting
The highly praised series Sharp Objects rightfully earned its acclaim, and that success has made HBO’s planned adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel Dark Places especially exciting. Variety reported in 2024 that Flynn will be a co-creator, writer, and co-showrunner on the miniseries, marking another collaboration between her and HBO.
The success of the Sharp Objects miniseries proves this approach can work wonderfully. After a lackluster 2015 film adaptation failed to capture the intricacies of Dark Places, a fresh adaptation from the team behind Sharp Objects offers a promising opportunity to accurately portray the novel’s story.
