Scarpetta Cast & Character Guide: Who Else Stars In Nicole Kidman’s Crime Thriller

Prime Video’s Scarpetta offers a compelling entry point into the popular world created by author Patricia Cornwell. Based on Cornwell’s Scarpetta novels – a series that began with Postmortem in 1990 – this show adapts one of the most successful psychological thriller book series ever written.

As a huge fan of the Kay Scarpetta novels, I’m thrilled to see the series finally get a TV adaptation! With almost 30 books in the series, there’s plenty of material to work with. What’s really interesting about the Prime Video series is that they’re tackling two books – Postmortem and the more recent Autopsy – at the same time. They’re telling the story across two timelines, showing Kay at different points in her life. Rosy McEwen is fantastic as the younger Kay, and it’s brilliant to see Nicole Kidman playing the older version of the character.

Actor Name Character Portrayed
Nicole Kidman Dr. Kay Scarpetta
Jamie Lee Curtis Dorothy Scarpetta
Ariana DeBose Lucy Farinelli-Watson
Bobby Cannavale Pete Marino

Nicole Kidman as Dr. Kay Scarpetta

June 20 1967

  • Active Since: 1983

I remember discovering Nicole Kidman way back when – it’s funny to think her first film role was in a little Australian Christmas movie called Bush Christmas in 1983. But she really grabbed Hollywood’s attention with Dead Calm in 1989, a genuinely gripping thriller. And then, just a year later, she was alongside Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder – it’s a film that doesn’t always get the credit it deserves, but it definitely helped launch her career.

Kidman quickly became a leading actress of her generation. She’s known for many popular and critically praised films, including To Die For, Eyes Wide Shut, Moulin Rouge, Practical Magic, The Hours, The Others, Dogville, Paddington, Lion, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Destroyer, and Babygirl. More recently, she’s appeared in the Aquaman films, Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

I’m really fascinated by the character of Dorothy in this series. She’s Kay’s sister, and what immediately struck me is how different she is. While Kay’s pretty cynical, Dorothy is this bright, optimistic person – a successful children’s book author, though she’s had a complicated love life with a string of failed marriages. It’s interesting to see Amanda Righetti play her when she’s younger, giving us a glimpse into her earlier years.
