Wow, it feels like just yesterday I discovered what quickly became one of the most intense and mature isekai anime out there! It’s based on a fantastic light novel series that’s still being written, which is amazing news for us fans. And guess what? In just about a month, we’re finally getting more of the story animated – I can’t wait!
After a long wait of ten years since the anime first aired, Re:Zero Season 4 is scheduled to come out in 2026. The new season will cover a particularly dark and intense storyline from the original novels, and like many recent anime, it will be released in parts rather than all at once.
One of the Darkest Modern Isekai Is About to Get Even Darker
The anime series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World first aired in April 2016 and has since released 66 episodes plus two special OVAs. Though it’s been a decade since its debut, the fourth season is only now being released. While it’s part of the popular isekai genre, known for stories about people transported to another world, Re:Zero offers more than just lighthearted fantasy and wish fulfillment.
Subaru Natsuki finds himself in a new world with a unique and painful ability: he can rewind time whenever he dies. However, he only discovers this power after enduring numerous brutal deaths. The story often highlights the emotional and mental toll this ability takes on him, and includes graphic violence. To make matters worse, Subaru can’t tell anyone about his power, and even rewinding time isn’t always enough to prevent the suffering of those he cares about, leaving him feeling helpless.
I’ve been following Re:Zero for a while now, and it’s always been a series that generally avoids really diving into truly dark territory. But things are about to change. The anime is adapting the “Loss Arc” from the original novels, and believe me, it lives up to the name. It’s a seriously tough story to watch. Subaru Natsuki doesn’t just lose his memories – he forgets everything he’s worked for, and even turns against the people he used to care about because he doesn’t recognize them. We’re going to see Subaru go through some truly horrific experiences and witness deaths more gruesome than anything we’ve seen in the series so far. They’re really pushing the limits of how brutal this anime can be.
The upcoming arc leans heavily into a dark, almost post-apocalyptic atmosphere, firmly establishing Re:Zero as a story far removed from typical power fantasies. The stakes are incredibly high, particularly focusing on the characters’ psychological struggles. The trailer offers a hint of this with the well-known “cave scene,” and viewers can expect even more intense and somber moments. The adaptation will also cover the “Recapture Arc,” delving even deeper into Subaru’s inner turmoil.
Re:Zero Season 4 Is Already Crunchyroll’s Biggest Isekai Release of 2026
The third season of Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World concluded in March 2025, and a fourth season was announced right away. This suggests the fourth season will be produced and released more quickly than the first two, which premiered in 2016 and 2020.
Season 4 is being made by White Fox, with Masahiro Shinohara directing. Like many anime series released recently, it will be divided into parts. The first part, consisting of 11 episodes, will start airing on April 8, 2026, and the remaining 8 episodes will begin on August 12. These episodes are based on volumes 21 to 25 of the original light novels, which together make up Arc 6 of the story.
Season 4 of Re:Zero will be available to stream exclusively on , the same platform that aired the earlier seasons. Konomi Suzuki and Ashnikko perform the opening theme, “Recollect,” and Myth & Roid, with vocals by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure (Toru Kitajima), created the ending theme, “Ender Ember.” Promotional materials, including previews and posters, ask “Who are you?” suggesting a dark storyline involving amnesia.
The upcoming season will cover approximately the middle of the story as it currently exists in the Re:Zero light novels. With 44 novels written (and 28 available in English), there’s plenty of content for many more seasons. This means the anime has a long future, even if the novels were to end, and the series’ unique, darker take on the isekai genre will continue for a while.
