3 Body Problem Season 2 Reportedly Faces Reduced Episode Count Ahead Of Netflix Release

Prepare for fewer episodes when returns.

The Netflix sci-fi series 3 Body Problem, created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo and based on Liu Cixin’s books, premiered in spring 2024. Netflix quickly renewed the show for two more seasons, intending for the third to conclude the story. Season 2 is scheduled to arrive in 2026, though the number of episodes remains unknown.

A recent wrap image shared by cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt, and reported on by What’s on Netflix, suggests that season 2 of 3 Body Problem might have only six episodes. This would be fewer than the eight episodes in the first season. The image shows a crew slate indicating they finished filming episode 206 – season 2, episode 6.

Goldschmidt announced the completion of their work on Season 2 of 3 Body Problem, saying it was a challenging but rewarding nine months spent with a fantastic team – some of whom are shown in the accompanying picture. They finished with a Hungarian expression of thanks, ‘Köszönöm szépen’.

According to What’s on Netflix, the next season of the show might only have five episodes – even fewer than season 2. However, Netflix hasn’t officially announced how many episodes either season will have.

The second season of 3 Body Problem will have fewer episodes, which aligns with how the show was generally received by audiences. Following the success of Game of Thrones, this Netflix series was heavily promoted as the next big project from the same creators. However, while 3 Body Problem gained attention, reviews weren’t as strong as anticipated, and the show, though popular, may not have attracted the massive viewership Netflix hoped for.

The series, featuring Eiza González, Jovan Adepo, Liam Cunningham, and Jess Hong, centers around scientists trying to prevent an alien invasion that’s predicted to happen far in the future. Despite having a strong cast and an interesting idea, it currently has a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audience scores are slightly lower at 76%.

As a big fan of sci-fi, I was a little worried to hear that 3 Body Problem might have fewer episodes in its second and third seasons. The way Game of Thrones wrapped up still stings for a lot of us, and I remember how many people felt the shorter seasons 7 and 8 really rushed the ending. It felt like they didn’t have enough time to properly tell the story, and I’m hoping 3 Body Problem avoids that same pitfall. Good storytelling needs space to breathe, you know?

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m really excited about 3 Body Problem, but I’m also a little worried it might stumble like Game of Thrones did towards the end. Honestly, with a reported $20 million per episode budget – and some say it’s even more! – it needs to be a massive hit for Netflix to justify the cost. So, the shorter first season isn’t a huge shock, really. They’re probably trying to keep things lean and focused.

The decision to shorten the episode count might also be due to the story itself. The second and third books by Cixin Liu are very large in scope, and the show may need to focus its budget to create the necessary visual effects for some of the more ambitious scenes and storylines.

While an exact release date for 3 Body Problem season 2 hasn’t been announced yet, it will likely premiere later this year now that filming has finished. Production on season 3 is also planned to begin this year, which could mean fans won’t have to wait as long for the concluding episodes.
